Shanghai

Postby Taka-Okami » Tue Dec 14, 2010 4:55 pm

I'll be in Shanghai for a few days mid Jan. Anyone know/recommend any good places to visit there? I've only got 2 days to look around, 4 days total in China.

take the 'bund sightseeing tunnel'. it's an incredibly surreal/bizarre tram thing that goes under the river between the bund and the shanghai tv tower park.

in the 5 minutes it takes up of your life, you will have experienced exactly what china is...gross overuse and wastage of electricity, resources, and power to send the world on a badly constructed, quickly glued together, hilariously engrished acid trip to a stinky hell.

hotel: westin on the bund is good. fairly new and good views of the river, and the prices should be reasonable now that the expo is done.

the three main areas are xintiandi, the bund, and the french concession. if you have an iphone, download the shanghai tang 'city chic' app. it even has 'taxi cards' in mandarin that you can just show a driver.

i was there 2 days and spent most of it in meetings, but was really fascinated by all the bizarre architecture and did a lot of long walks along both sides of the river.

(i'm sure one of our penile specimened colleagues here will tip you where to get yourself shanghai tanged in the non-couture sense of the word)

That is, illegal and very very easy to get. Any expat club or decent hotel bar will have its fair share of girls. Even easier just call the front desk at your hotel and have one sent up to your room for a massage.

Don't forget to go to the counterfeit market and buy overpriced fakes for cheap.

Also, go to the top of the Oriental Pearl tower and eat authentic local delicacies at the cafeteria. I particularly recommend the hairy crabs and the dried black fish - they're simply awful.

You mean these don't come together with the massage you order from the hotel lobby?

You called Cyka?

Well, if you can't get laid in Shanghai without a tip from the peanut gallery here, you can't get laid in a five dollar whorehouse with a 20 dollar bill in your teeth.....

You have to ask for them specifically - but the black crabs don't cost extra, until you go see a doctor about getting them removed.

Just came back from a trip to Shanghai and Changzhou. I reckon Shanghai was great, very modern (well the parts I stayed in). Took the bullet train to Changzhou, just as good as what the Japs have. No wonder they are worried. The only let down was the food was not as good as what I thought it might have been. Definately could live and work there no worries, depending on the job of course (NO ENGRISH TEACHING)

Spotted a few engrish teacher drones on the subway, obviously rejects from Japan.

This article on Shanghai was featured on CNN today (a few non Engrish teacher FG's are mentioned):

Americans fall for rising Shanghai

Inside the three-story "Chinatown" nightclub, the packed building that once housed a Japanese temple was anything but Zen on a recent Friday night.

Red decor and smoky rooms, loud music and burlesque acts, gyrating Russian dancers and a cheering international crowd -- this could be a quintessential Shanghai scene in the 1930s, if not for the ringing cell phones on the tables.

"I think you could hardly keep a good town down," said British owner Andrew Bull.

In the early years of the 20th century, Shanghai was the foremost cosmopolitan city in the Far East, home to some 70,000 foreigners and flourishing in trade and commerce -- the leading Asian city in style and decadence.

* * *

Hundreds of bars and nightclubs now dot city streets, and government statistics show the number of registered foreign residents by the end of 2008 has exploded to 152,000 -- with Americans being the second largest community, trailing Japanese residents.
