Body sushi

The Independent (UK) editors, are having a nap on a slow-news day.
Image Forget the naked chef. Round here we have ...
The Independent 'Los Angeles Stories' 24 August 2003

...Body sushi is a long-standing tradition in Japan, where it is regarded as a rather demode entertainment for men, but brand new in the West.

...it is not a mark of decadence. Heaven forfend. "It's about the beauty of the environment that has been created," he says, with an entirely straight face. "It's about integrity." Perhaps suitably for the digital age, he calls it "interactive dining".... one of his body sushi guests had been MC Hammer. Hammer, who has got religion in a big way since quitting the music business, was one of the rare few who begged off, saying that eating off the flesh of a naked woman was against his principles. Everyone else, Arabia said, was enthusiastic - men and women. Especially the women.

------
(Hint: I once had to find a "body sushi" venue for visiting American clients. It took me and two OLs hours of calling to find one place that performed the "service". One mama-san chukled and told me that body sushi is NOT a "long-standing tradition" as much as it is more like oddity requested by wacky gaijin tourists.

First time I ever saw it was in that Snipes/Connery movie. Never seen it in Japan. Wonder what the Japanese is for Urban Legend

Rising Sun

At a celebration over the completed joint venture between a Japanese company and a US defence contractor a young woman is found strangled. A retired foreign liaison with expertise on Japanese culture is called in to help the current liaison overcome resistance from the Japanese, who are actively trying to mislead the investigation. As the liaisons get closer to the truth, political pressure is applied to get them off the case, and they must race against time to resolve it.

Perhaps the Urban Legend came from this book where I first heard about it. Body sushi was one of the most "interesting" photos in the Collins Publications bestseller A Day in the Life of JapanImage (May 1986) which was part of the "Day in the Life" series.

From Library Journal"
On June 7, 1985, 100 photographers from around the world set out to cover Japan. Many had participated in A Day in the Life of Canada ( LJ 11/1/85) and the similar books on Australia and Hawaii. This, however, is the first such coverage of a non-Western, non-English-speaking country. The color photographs are sumptuously reproduced and every one holds our attention. The pictures are arranged chronologically, from early morning until late at night. A map of Japan shows where each was taken. Photographers are credited next to their pictures, and biographies of participants follow the picture essay, as does a story about their experiences taking these 300 pictures, chosen from some 135,000 exposures. The range of subjects covered is enormous and shakes up our notions about Japan.
