Yamada Denki After Care Service Is Legally Bad

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Dec 15, 2010 12:44 am

In 2008, Nikkei Business magazine carried out a survey of consumer electronics retailers which placed Yamada Denki at the bottom for consumer satisfaction. The company was displeased with this outcome and sued the Nikkei for 55 million yen in damages, claiming that the survey was not carried out as randomly as the publisher claimed. A judge has now ruled in favour of the magazine and dismissed the suit. In his opinion, the survey results were not produced arbitrarily so the magazine cannot be guilty of unfairly damaging the retailer's reputation. A Yamada spokesman has said they will immediately appeal.

Fuck Yamada and all the other retailers! Why would I pay twice as much (in some cases) for a product I can get online?

Last year I tried to get a camera from bic camera.

I told the guy in the shop:

"I saw this camera online for 20.000. I know you probably cant bring the price down to 20k. But if you give me some discount ill buy it right now" (camera was 30.000 in the shop)

Guy in Shop: "Muri...."

Is this what passes for a sales person in Japan?

Opposite of my most recent experience at Yamada Denki. I came armed with printouts of online and brick-and-mortar shops selling the camera for about 30% cheaper, and that was already taking Yamada's points into account. I told him I'd prefer not to trek all the way to Akihabara, but for that big of a price difference it was worth the trip. This was not a cheap camera so there were tens of thousands of yen at stake.

He immediately made up half the difference by lowering the price, and gave me the rest back in points. So I paid a price basically equal to the lowest price I saw online.

P.S. I may be wrong but I suspect that if an online vendor is half of Bic's price, it is unlikely to be an authentic offer. The big retailers are not THAT uncompetitive.

It can happen with discontinued items if the online shop bought them at deep discounts from someone further up the supply chain who wanted to unload dead stock.

For current items though a 50% price reduction likely means the online shop in question doesn't have stock. They list super low prices as a way to get you to your site in the hopes that you will buy something else. The online version of "bait and switch" basically.

They will appeal, hm? - bad publicity is better than no publicity.

Check Amazon.co.jp sometimes they got even laser printers at 70% discount (canon brand)... when stock don't move, place seems to have more value than unsold products...
Sometimes it's just a 24h discount, I got me a Tamiya RC truck at 15000 yens, 50% discount on a friday evening. Next saturday it was back to full price.

Ditto here. The new largish printer/copier I bought there was by far the best price in town.
