CNNGo Chooses Top 10 Japan Blogs

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Dec 30, 2010 7:33 am

10 Best English language blogs of 2010

  1. Green-Eyed Geisha
  2. Lost in Translation
  3. The Salaryman The Yakuza The Host Boy
  4. Tokyo Moe
  5. The adventures of a Foreign Salaryman in Tokyo
  6. Japan Subculture Research Center
  7. Gakuranman
  8. Kyoto Foodie: Where and what to eat in Kyoto
  9. Snow mag
  10. The Tokyo Reporter

Good news for The Tokyo Reporter. That's probably my only regular read from the list. In fact, I'd never heard of over half of them but I'm not as conscientious at searching through Japan blogs these days. It's good that CNNGo picked up a healthy proportion of female bloggers because they didn't always seem to make such lists before.

I have only heard of #5 and #10 and only regularly read Tokyo Reporter.

Now, if they had listed Message Boards about Japan we can only speculate on who #1 would be. . .

I'm dismayed to see that our very own self-published right-wing swastika-emblazoned cultural-expert-in-residence, McToejam wasn't among the esteemed blogerati.

I've never heard of any of them other than The Tokyo Reporter which in my opinion is the best one on the list. I do like Kyoto Foodie and SNOW Magazine so far though. Is the number order of that list reversed?

I agree with those who think Tokyo Reporter is a good choice. I scanned through some of the others and thought they were mostly crap. More of the same "newbie discovers Japan" theme.

But, to be fair, their audience is people who've never been to Japan.
Eh?

Thanks for uploading the links, I got quite a good few chuckles and snickers from reading them. Some of the things I wish I could erase though.

The original list isn't meant as a ranking so I don't think it matters.

Taking a closer look at selection, it seems CNNGo decided to go for diversity and excluded aggregator blogs like Japan Probe. I can't say too many will become regular reads. It is quite heartening to see a list of Japan blogs which doesn't mention Danny Choo. Then again, I suppose he's now more a mini media mogul than a simple blogger.
