this stuff would alot more informative if it was broken down on a per capita basis based on age groups to minimize demographic shifts. The Chinese numbers would be still be growing, but the would still be low compared to Japan's...cocktail napkin math suggests China would roughly have to double the number of students in the US to match Japan's on a per capita basis.

I think that yomiuri piece that Bucky pointed out has a really good point at the end

One major factor behind the decrease is that it has become easier for students to enter Japanese universities due to the nation's chronically low birthrate. Students also consider studying abroad to be disadvantageous in terms of job hunting, which usually begins in earnest during their junior year

The student at Exeter is getting his PHD in Geological studies. The teacher I work with who graduated from Ohio state got her PHD in English Literature.

Thanks, canman.

I can understand the English Literature graduate having almost zero opportunities in Japan.

I see you wrote the geology student was turned down for "almost every job," so there there has been at least one job offer.
Eh?

phd in english.... sucks for her.

I feel bad for the geologist though... why not get a job in another country with more opportunities? being E/J bilingual must be a good buy in?

Schlumberger Japan were damn nice to me (even though I ended up not working for them)

Schlumberger (Japan) needs people with geology backgrounds who have a head for practical application and engineering. They have a fancy campus-like headquarters in Sagamihara, Kanagawa north of Yokohama. Schlumberger always rated in the top 50 best companies in the world to work for and the Japan operation is involved in cutting-edge, J-government funded, research projects (like mining methane hydrate from the deep ocean bottom).

There have to be some other issues limiting his job offers, don't you think?
