Meizu M9 on the DoCoMo network?

Postby waruta » Wed Jan 26, 2011 5:39 pm

Docomo's network:

3G FOMA W-CDMA services on the 2 GHz (UMTS2100) and 800 MHz(UMTS800(Band VI)) and 1700 MHz(UMTS1700(Band IX)) bands.

(according to Wikipedia)

and the Meizu specs:

Networks: GSM, GPRS, EDGE, 3G network support: WCDMA, HSDPA and HSUPA with speeds of 7,2/5,76 Mbps (Both schould work in Europe). Only supports the 2100 Mhz band of WCDMA. Check google for info in your country supports the 2100 Mhz band.

So it should work? How about the sp-mode mail support....any NTT engineers want to chip in?

As opposed to the real IPhone, made in the factory across the street from the Meizu one...

Nothing delusional about Android. It's already wiping the floor with the iPhone and it's going to get a lot worse this year. As usual Apple has fucked themselves in the ass with a closed system that they refuse to license.

Well yes and no. There are still a heap of limitations with Android for devs. Android phones are still really mostly appealing for early adopters and tech savvy. iOS devices are still the device of choice for the stylistas and general phone/music user.

It is weird though to talk about iPhone and Android in the same sentence though as Android is a platform with lots of different hardware partners whereas the iPhone is really just one type of hardware running iOS. This is why I talk about iOS rather than iPhone.

I think there will be a happy co-existence with still lots more growth for Android in the tech savvy segment but iOS still holding as market leader for mass market. They just have the infrastructure and mindshare already solidified with iTunes.

The tablet market is going to get saturated very quickly and there will be lots of losers in this "battle of the tab"(TM). Hard to see who at this point will come out on top.

The "smart phone" market as a whole will continue to grow and while Apple growth will slow as iOS continues to mature there is still plenty of meat on the Apple bones for quite some time to come. By "smart phone" I mean these metoo clones of iPhone form factor and not the original idea of the Symbian smartphones.

For the developers, if you were not in the game from the get go, then it is super hard to crack into it now that the market is so mature. Usual supply economics do not apply given the dearth of apps out there in this age of electronic distribution of non-tangible goods.

I need to get back in the loop a bit more. I have been holed up at home being a new Mum and so have been out of touch a bit. Would welcome some more discussion on this topic as I am probably speaking outa my arse.

Oh noes....looks like someone didn't like the iOS vs Android comment, gave me an iSnot and didn't even iSign it...

Sigh. I'll agree that an iOS works well on the dedicated single platform it was exclusively developed for, while Android does have it's teething issues, but shee-it, it can't compare to the multitude of hardware and software and UI Launchers that a 'Droid can support.

(not me th3 redsnotting)

But you know... that's where I see delusion...

Great you have choice between unlimited numbers of launchers... from my experience that will mean: some will have half the feature with too much bugs, other will have the other half of the feature one my want, with various amount of bugs too, some will have really little feature but will be fast and bug free, 1 will have all the feature, make coffee and be so bloated that it will need 1 core for himself all the time...

Same with windows... the windows explorer is below average... you can replace it... GREAT... you select an OS and have to replace one of the main component from the get go...

This is nice... when your computer or phone is managed like a hobby in itself... But when you use it as a tool that should just work... A polished interface that might be limited but perform well is what you want...

Lets make a car analogy... I can't change the camber, caster or gearbox ratio on my car... Some will see it as a limitation... Meanwhile, even with quite some interest in chassis design... I'm not bothered at all... It's a shopping trolley that start all the time... everyday... for the last 5 years or so...

So, yes, for FGL and some people the IPhone might make no sense at all. The same way my car make no sense for people likeJean Ragnotti(blue car is 3rd evolution of race version of the Renault 5 Le Car). But with most android user you hear "my phone can, can , can" the same way they say they can choose component by themselve for their PC which is true, but 1 one case they most of the time struggle with a phone they barely understand and in the other case end up with no brand bargain bin component made by fly by night chinese factory...

I've used Mac for work stuff since my Mac Plus, back them it was "Mac is dead, you can do anything, plus there is no games" no it turned to "Mac is for tools and hipster you are limited to blahhh blahh blahhh..." Now I use IOs devices because... that sh1t just work... I check all the video camera of my building... any time, without any failure... And never needed to put my hand under the hood... nice no ? Mominlaw do videoconferencing from every room in the building with her american expat granddaughter, by herself without any help... she's 70 and got her first computer 6 month ago... Sure you CAN CAN CAN do it with windows and android... but you have to enjoy software that might work one day and die on you the other one, might not be supported on your plateform, or not FULLY supported and when something missbehave it's never anybody's fault or more precisely... it's always the other one that is guilty...

I think that's an interesting question. Most people, including me, aren't especially tech savvy, even if the average level of knowledge is probably greater than it was 10 or 20 years ago.

I've always thought that one reason Japanese companies fell behind in developing consumer technology products in the world of computers and the internet is because it was just too messy. They were used to producing reliable, stand-alone devices and couldn't work out how to do that in a world of software bugs, hard drive crashes and viruses.

To a large extent, the computing and communication devices we have today do have stability and ease-of-use, and Apple has been in the vanguard of that development. It seems natural to assume that less tech-savvy consumers prefer that kind of environment.

However, AOL once offered that kind of experience as a gateway to the internet but customers began to prefer the wild and woolly web to their carefully cultivated, walled-off garden, eventually turning AOL into a low-margin ISP and just one of many competing content providers.

Apple still has a clear hardware design advantage, although some might argue the gap is not as great as it once was given that other companies have worked out the importance of style, design and branding. I do wonder, though, about the other other parts of the Apple experience. The App store, for instance, looks like another carefully cultivated, walled-off garden.

I suppose one question is: which environment best encourages creativity and new product development? I can understand Apple's argument that it functions as a trusted curator which allows a market to flourish in ways that an open and unregulated market would not. I can also see how some might think that it's too restrictive.

It's an open question right now but I don't think any company should take it for granted that the market will always prefer smooth, beautiful and reliable over competing products and services, which might be uglier and cranky but which start to meet needs we don't yet know we have. Japanese firms made that mistake and haven't really yet been able to make up the ground they lost.

I wouldn't get so excited about a phone that you can't even buy in Japan, probably can't even buy in China, and that had to revert hire people to stand in fake lineups to create a buzz.

When and if it's for sale here, let's talk.

Hmmmm, which one will let you buy and play 15 year old Playstation 1 games like market smashes like "Cool Boarders"? (Keep aiming for the stars Sony!)
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/playstation-suite/

I think ultimately a majority will opt for the Android side of things because of the affordability of the Android devices, while the tech elite will side with it more because Android's more rapid refreshes, so new handsets will be able to dish out more/faster new hotness every few months vs. Apple's once a year hardware updates. But that said, more than a few folks like the straightforward (ie, controlled) experience on the iphone and the integrated itunes/apps marketplace structure. Most folks really don't want to know what version of their OS they are running, let alone if its gingerbread or froyo, and they don't want to know either....they just want stuff that works. Apple's market share in PC grew over the last decade primarily because they got new users (such as myself) who were Windows folks for the longest time but who were just utterly fed up with all the problems Windows had and were willing to accept Apple's "we know what's best for you" style for stable, more virus resistant platform. I think in the smartphone market, Apple will have an easier time because, ultimately, most people want something that works well and simply when communicating. The tablet market will be harder for Apple where more people will have a greater acceptance of variation/expectation of variation for their specific needs and there will be much greater competition due to lack of contract lock ins (ie, an ipad user isn't necessarily locked in for 2 years at time unlike an iphone user), esp if Apple keeps thinking $500 is an acceptable entry level price point.

I think Mulboyne's AOL mention fits well for the tablet market....While AOL's users did grow more sophisticated, the thing that really did AOL in was that bare bones ISPs were offering similar or more generous access offerings at 1/3 or 1/2 the price of AOL and US folks were willing to put up with more bumpy internet experience at those prices.

Why Android Will Win the Tablet Wars

That sums it up fairly well, is well written, and includes references for points made. The short version though is that it's a foregone conclusion that iOS will be a niche market OS and Android will have the lions share of smartphones and tablets. Apple can't compete with the huge range of products coming to market.
