I think this may have been mentioned on the forum before, but I can't manage to find any references to it. Since I am sure all of you are happy, paying NHK customers () I thought everybody should be aware of the upcoming service changes.
You probably know about the general end of analog terrestrial TV broadcasting on July 24th. But ahead of that, NHK is also completely re-doing their digital satellite lineup. They will change from 2 regular and 1 hi-vision channels to 2 hi-vision channels, thereby reducing total programming by one channel.
At the moment, BS-1 and BS-2 are not hi-vision, and BS-Hi is the hi-vision channel. I believe the last analog satellite broadcasts stopped in 2007, so these are currently available on digital satellite only.
The new plan: There will be 2 hi-vision satellite channels in total. "BS1" will, like its predecessor, focus on international & sports programming. The other channel will be called "BS Premium" and will carry culture & entertainment programming, much like the old BS-2 and BS-hi did. This starts on April 1, 2011. Announcement here (Japanese).
I am not sure if this news excites anybody, but I am sure we can all agree that 4 NHK TV channels is better than 5.
