Steven Seagal? Who's that?

Movies, TV, music, anime other random J-pop culture phenomenons. Also film/video production, technical discussion, cast and crew calls, etc.

Seagal's aikido skills is probably top-notch but his acting skills....

You've got to admit that he's a pretty good shot though:

Steven Seagal helped Anderson Silva with KO front kick

Action film star Steven Seagal accompanied UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva to the Octagon at UFC 126 on Saturday night before Silva knocked Vitor Belfort out with a highlight reel front kick. Seagal was not just there for star power. According to Silva, he learned the kick from Seagal.

"Steven Seagal helped me perfect that kick. That was a kick we were working on before I stepped in," Silva said through a translator at the post-fight press conference. "This was a kick that I trained a lot." .....

For all the bad things you can say about the guy, technically he's always looked pretty solid. It's about time we can smile and give the guy kudos...even if it is in a supporting role. He was also good in the under 30 minutes of film he was on supporting Kurt Russel in Executive Decision. 8)

I always think Steven Seagal somehow ends up doing lead roles for shitty movies that tanks at the theaters and goes straight to DVD rentals. Jean-Claude Van Damme kind of fits in to this category too.

That may be but it doesn't make sense that an MMA fighter at the top of his game with a background in muay thai and kick boxing would be perfecting his front kick under the tutelage of a washed-up action star aikidoka with no history of training prize fighters. I'm not saying Sylva is lying or delusional but I am saying it's fucking weird.

He was also in Silva's corner in his comeback fight for UFC 117. Two time winning cornerman. Might be weird, but Silva's going with what works...

I will say this - he appears to be doing his damnedest to not look down the interviewer's top in the vid Taro posted! Where's your ki now, lawman?!

LOL, his acting performance has nothing to do with his ability to train fighters. Hell, your suggestion of "no history training prize fighters" is alot weirder because it would suggest you believe his acting career was the result of...his acting ability.

I'm not a big fan of Seagal but in fairness to his acting ability he generally plays himself in roles (ie martial arts fighter.) Based on the few interviews I have seen of him that's how he is in real life so it's not surprising that he plays himself that way in movies. Perhaps his personality just doesn't make for interesting movie dialog.

Those are some interesting logical leaps you made there. Most people who train professional fighters do so as a career or at least a side job for many years. On top of that most people who train fighters train them in something they're expert at teaching. Last time I checked, an aikido dojo wasn't the best place to perfect a front kick and Seagal doesn't have a history or taining pro fighters. If Silva had won his fight with tai sabaki foot work or a standing writst lock, it'd be different.

You're missing my point, here's more of Seagal not training pro fighters... http://www.youtube.com/v/-rAWIqRbda4?version=3

Youtube alone has quite alot of videos of him not making a career/sidejob of training fighters...

I don't, you fucking moran.

Do you understand the difference between aikido, kick boxing, and MMA? Would you expect a boxing coach to be teaching single-leg takedowns to the Olympic wrestling team? Do you even know what a single-leg takedown or a front kick is?

Moran? You mean moron? "Do you understand the difference" :hehe:

Yeah, he's famous for Aikido but obviously he's not as one dimensional as you are arguing he is. Would I expect a boxing coach to know wrestling? Nope...but if I heard he was teaching single-leg take downs to the Olympic wrestling team members, it would be pretty obvious his expertise isn't limited to boxing. Thassssalllimmmmasssayin'
