Actually, I think he'd stay if he thought he could, but he realizes his time is up and doesn't want to look like a loser when he gets his ass whupped in the election.

The only question now is.......Will the next guy be even worse? :(
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Actually, the "next guy" according to my drinking with the high mucky-mucks running the TSE last night should be Miki Watanabe who is sort of young version of Major Bloomberg. Watanabe is a businessman and outsider compared to the typical political hacks in the race.

It's like when the teacher tells that retarded kid in the class "You can be anything you want."

Well... he did it.

Interesting. Osaka is doing pretty well with our "outsider" governor. Hopefully Watanabe kicks some ass and makes improvements.

I'd rather see him lose an election, but if he ran the chances are he'd win again, people vote for the name they remember, forgetting the reason they remember it.

He's a smart guy, started out working as a delivery man for Sagawa or somesuch, saved his money, opened his first restaurant, and built it up from there.

From the Mainichi article linked above

Watanabe also expressed his intention to bid to host Olympics in Tokyo if that would excite Tokyo's citizens.

Thank the heavens! I hope the new guy isn't as racist and crazy.
Ishihara's racism and intolerance of youth culture and multimedia were awful, and it was sad to have the governor of one of the world's major cities be such a backward-thinking oaf. So long, blinky! No one wants to read your rape novels.

His prejudice is warranted and he's no more racist than your ilk. He is very Japanese and has ever right to voice his OPINION. He is right in what he says about the youth and foreigners AND women! I wish I could gain a foot hold into to the media and speak my mind.

The very fact that you have to say "I wish" shows that you have neither the smarts, nor the saavy to speak to the media on any topic, for any reason. I recommend you stay on the internet where you can dream and say anything your heart desires and you don't have to provide evidence, or back up anything you say, or write.

Tokyo has by far the youngest population of any prefecture in Japan. Blaming old folks for Ishihara is unjustified. I suspect that it is the young who favor the flashy colorful controversal over the pragmatic and prudent.

Out here where all the old timers live and fret about taxes, any whiff of financial scandal and you better get your Mubarak bags out for a quick exit.

Tokyo Gov. Ishihara likely to announce if he will seek fourth term at assembly session Image
Mainichi News | Feb. 17, 2011
Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara is likely to officially announce whether he will seek re-election at the end of the last Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly session of his third term in March.
Amid a flurry of speculation as to when Ishihara will make an announcement about his position on the upcoming gubernatorial race, sources close to the 78-year-old governor have explained that he will probably unveil his decision about the election along with his thoughts on Japan and Tokyo at a plenary session on March 11, the last day of the ongoing session.
Although Ishihara had previously hinted that he would not seek re-election at the end of his present term, a high-ranking metropolitan government official indicates that the situation has now changed...more....

There is a possibility that he will throw his hat into the ring if he concludes that he cannot leave the administration of the metropolitan area up to other candidates

Looks like a situation in which the good people of Tokyo might want to take a cue from Egypt.

Nothing wrong with that statement. And I can fair better than most in any given situation. Backing and supporting statements is easy. What's your point? I'm on Ishihara's side.

You have to know his side first. Why don't you give me a couple of his issues/policies that you side with....
