Nice find. It would appear that there is virtually no difference between punters "teaching" English in Korea, and cultural mentors, I mean eikaiwa "sensei" here in Japan.

BigInJapan wrote:Actually, my post was not meant to bash those that really teach English (in Japan, or Korea).
I have several foreign friends that are longtime J residents that teach English, including private tutors, English school owners, and tenured professors at private universities and I completely respect the honest hard work that they do.
The reason I used quotes around "teaching" and "sensei" is that the "punters" (I thought about saying Charisma Man instead), are the opposite (they do not really "teach", and are not really "sensei").
e.g. the foreign Charisma Man type guy in the kimchi video admits to not really being a teacher, looks down on the local culture, and guys like him are just there to be a slacker and hope to get paid for "teaching" when all they do is low-level mediocre conversation.

and yeah, my bad for engaging in that. but i do have a knee jerk disdain for the low end english edu industry, but maybe it still does some good for the population...

BTW, you'd be shocked at how much nicer Seoul and its resident have become over the last few years.

Samurai_Jerk wrote:You don't know how far down the shitter. I know some guys who've been at it over 20 years. They never expected to get rich but had a great work-life balance and a couple even managed to settle down with great ladies and buy a home in the 'burbs of Tokyo. As of two years ago they've been struggling to pay the mortgage and wondering where it all went wrong.
