LDP Proposes Outlawing Insults to Flag and Anthem

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Mar 03, 2011 8:28 am

The LDP has proposed criminalizing desecration of the national flag, with possible penalties of a prison sentence or 200,000 yen fine. The Asahi now reports (Japanese) that the LDP is also thinking of proposing legislation to outlaw insulting parodies of Kimigayo.

[yt]UwodtldRCuQ[/yt]
When Kiyoshiro Imawano tried to release this version of Kimigayo, his record label dropped him. It's not a parody as such, so whether it would also be judged insulting under proposed legislation is unclear.

I just don't see this getting them anywhere. All it does is remind people why they turfed out these bozos 2 years ago. God know there are tons of issues on which the DJP can be roundly criticized this isn't going to atrract any new voters and it will scare away anyone who is moderate.

Kimigayo has got to be the lamest national anthem out there.. even the Japanese admit this.

I can still bitch about this until they really make this law in effect.

This is a worrying trend. Not just in terms of the underlying current of growing nationalism, but also in the fact that the politicians can find time to diddle around with details like this while there are so many other bigger issues that need to be addressed first. Fiddling while the nation burns, as it were.

What a bunch of unimaginative, unconcerned time wasters.

It would be unconstitutional but constitutional law does not matter much in japan. The legal system, as well as the police, make up their own rules.

Of course I'd chime on this one. LDP is doing the right thing, simply because one thing will lead to another.

RIA NOVOSTI: Japan refuses to reinvestigate Russian flag desecration
Japan does not believe it necessary to reopen a probe into the desecration of a Russian flag by right-wing campaigners in the country, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said. Japanese right-wing campaigners dragged the Russian flag along the ground outside the Russian Embassy in Tokyo on February 7, demanding the return of a group of the disputed Kuril Islands in Russia's Far East. "The desecration of the national flag is regrettable, but there was no violation of Japanese legislation," Edano was quoted by the Kyodo news agency as saying. The embassy sent a protest note to the Japanese Foreign Ministry just after the incident and Russia later imposed an entry ban on the heads of two Japanese companies over the incident.

Two Japanese extremist organizations, the Brotherhood Community Devoted for Great Japan and the Solidarity League for the Return of the Northern Territories, have been banned from entering Russia. Russia issued a diplomatic protest to Japan on Wednesday after Tokyo dismissed Moscow's demand for criminal proceedings . Japan stands firmly by its position that the extremists desecrated not the Russian flag, but "a self-made object," resembling a flag, the Russian Embassy in Japan said.

OK, so if an FG made an effigy* of the emperor, or a hand-made hinomaru, and dragged it along the ground around the imperial palace, there would be no repercussions whatsoever?

* Ooh ... note the spooky similarity in pronunciation between "FG" and "effigy" ... whoa dude!

The anthem is almost a self-parody in that a country
increasingly full of seniors has a song that sounds like a funeral dirge.

And the flag is such a simple design..

It's not a Japanese flag, officer.

I remember Koji Gushiken winning the individual gymnastics gold medal for Japan at the Los Angeles Olympics. When Kimigayo was played I thought it was very moving, compared with some of the other anthems. You can get a small taste towards the end of this video:

What helped make an impact, and what you can't see so well here, is how it touched Gushiken to hear his country's anthem played as he took the top award.

Anthems and colored cloth are cheap tricks to keep the taxpayers of nation-states emotionally distracted. They are just tools to turn the public into blubbering little girls so they send the kids off as cannon fodder in the wars each generation has foisted on them by politicians.
Eh?

I remember when Makebono fought his first K1 bout against Bob Sapp on New Year's Eve, there was an arrangement of Kimigayo with traditional Japanese instruments and a young lady singing. It was much better than with a brass band, and much better than the fight to follow, for that matter.

It's not often that Get Fuzzy and Fucked Gaijin overlap, but damned if they didn't.
