[floatl]Image[/floatl]New iPad 2 Smart Covers inspired by Japanese bath tub lids?
tuaw.com | Mar 3rd 2011
Everyone following the iPad 2 announcement is aware of the new Smart Covers for the iPad 2. These flap-like covers attach to the iPad using a magnet and have an accordion-style look. The covers, amusingly enough, also resemble a style of Japanese bath tub lids!
The resemblance is so uncanny that the unveiling of these new cases caused a flurry of bath tub lid comments among Japanese Apple fans...more...

YES! Just like Dr. Nakamats (who is running for Tokyo governor again) invented the fuel cell, fax machine, CD, and floppy-disk.

Why can't apple simply create a device that doesn't need a condom cover to protect itself from scratches?

They could've used gorilla glass like Samsung but it would've made the device thicker. Apple: Form over function.

Not exactly. It's more like Apple understands that form actually has a real impact on how something functions!

Sometimes. Using Gorilla Glass would have added a few mm in thickness to the iPad and possibly stopped them from being able to make claims about how thin it is. It also would've made it so they couldn't sell a few million covers at $$ profit each.

Another example is the sharp edges on the front of the MacBook Pros. Apple could round those edges easily but it would lesson the visual impact of the product so they keep them painfully sharp.

There's no denying the coolness/sexyness factor of Apple's industrial design. I just wish it didn't come with practical downsides.

Having to put on the condom sleeve (or those leather book binding ones) still adds a few mm to the overall thickness. I laugh when all the clowns have to put on the louzy silocone cover on when I don't have to with my B-berry. It's not like you are going to keep the phone forever unless you are a fuckin cheapskate.

Most people switch phones after 2 years when their contracts are up anyway.

Jack supposedly invented the floppy-dick but you don't see him bragging about inventing it.

Yeah, but you have to use a Blackberry. Was a nice product in about 2005 but it doesn't compare to iOS or Android at this point. Would be nice to see RIM get their mojo back (being Canadian and all...) but I'm not holding my breath.
