Actually as fucked up as it all is in the long term this will probably help economic growth as the sheer scale of the re-building will boost the economy. In the short-term though, who knows? You'd have to expect some sort of earthquake tax/levy.

Just popped on NHK TV news a moment ago. They're saying that at 4PM witnesses heard the sound of an explosion at the Fukushima #1 nuclear plant, and about 10 minutes later white smoke was seen. There are reports of workers with injuries.

Great, now the Koreans will start conspiracy theories on how this was a manmade earthquake designed by the evil Japanese to wipe out Korea.

TEPCO has just confirmed the blast, according to NHK's website.

OK, this meltdown is kind of freaking me out. Especially since I don't understand everything they say on the news..

Is Chiba-ken relatively safe? Is there some sort of map that shows the areas where it's going to be hell? What the hell are you supposed to do if all this sh*t comes your way? Stay inside and hold your breath?!

The US NHK English feed just led off with 'several workers have been injured in an explosion at Fukushima #1 plant". If this goes real bad, you have to wonder how Japan is going to get by without nuclear power plants given they generate 30% of the Japan's electricity

They just showed some photos and the outer building wall of the #1 reactor is down.

Video here: http://www.twitvid.com/LICNU

When it was just reported I thought it was just a puff, it looks like most of the building panels were blown off.

On NHK's live broadcast, they are comparing photos taken this morning, and this afternoon showing that one of the buildings (reactors?) has lost it walls as a result of an explosion (not confirmed). Four people were taken to the hospital.
They are also warning people in the area that in the event of a leak of radioactive materials to shut windows, turn off ventilation, and if you have to move around outside to evacuate, cover your mouth/nose with a wet close and try not to breathe the air. Also, if you come back to your house, change your clothes and take a shower ASAP.
A "hyper rescue team" has been sent in, and there will be a press conference at some point later on.

The same thing happened in 1995 after the Kobe earthquake, the Yen gained about 18% following that event. Many economist suspected that it was due to repatriation of the Yen by Japanese companies needing to rebuild and repair.

Indeed, gonna fuck up trade even more though...yen is already too strong to be competitive. Oh well, good for me in the short term at least, we're 99% import right now.

I basically dodged a bullet where I am in Fukushima. Here the biggest damage was a lack of onigiri and bento at the Seven Eleven.

NHK's coverage of the nuclear plant has been horrible. Photos of of the plant before and after while another channel has video of the explosion? Weird.

Guess it depends on how the government responds. Hopefully as the yen is so strong already they'll do what they can to limit further gains.

Problem is the scared companies and people don't spend money. If you're importing goods useful for reconstruction then there should be quite a boom. If it's anything else though a big drop in sales wouldn't be surprising.

Regardless, fast movements in exchange rates cause more problems than whatever point the rate itself is at (within some reason of course.)

Holy crap. They just showed the aftermath of the tsunami in Iwate-ken on Ch. 4. The wave left debris on the 4th floor balconies of a 5 story apartment buidling.

FB friend suggested contacting the embassy or consulate for potassium iodide. Don't know if they'll actually have any or enough if they do.

Well, the J-gov't would certainly have an incentive in playing down this catastrophic failure of J-nuke design. Nonetheless, I don't think exports of Japanese reactor technology are going to be booming in the coming years.

From what we know...

The guy planning for earthquake damage did a good job, it's the doofus not protecting the diesel auxiliary power units against tsunami damage in a coastal plant that should be beheaded...
