From Tepco website, group numbers for different wards in Tokyo prefecture (this has the latest information and might be updated)

http://www.tepco.co.jp/images/tokyo.pdf

Time periods for different groups

http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20110313-00000582-yom-soci

The areas listed there are from this evening but could be outdated if TEPCO updates their list

I heard from a couple of people that the rolling blackouts are going to go on for six weeks or into April.

we have an Eco Will system where the gas heating also produces electricity, but it turns off automatically if the electricity is cut, for safety reasons apparently

so it's effing useless

Was it here that I read that Mt Fuji's last eruption came on the heels of a massive earthquake?

Rolling blackouts certainly suck. We had them for just one day last month due to the cold. Can't imagine a month of that stuff, and I imagine most folks in Japan have never contemplated a backup generator.

I have been thinking about what I will have to do with the rolling blackouts in my hometown but I wonder how this is going to affect everybody's work. I would guess a lot of companies would just tell their workers to not come into work. Or will they try to adjust work hours around the blackouts? And what about the train lines? Will they get power or do they produce their own? (Just idiot me thinking out loud......)

And perhaps you should tell the whole story...

Certainly not a defender of the French, but a quick look on kayak.com for a fare from Narita to CDG for a Monday flight only shows business and first class seats available. Of course it's expensive. Stretch that out to a Thursday flight and economy seats are available at less than a 1/10th the price.

BTW, filter on business fares only and Air France is one of the cheapest. Pay for first, which is what you show for Air France, you're either loaded beyond belief or just plain stupid for paying that much for a flight.

Dear Christen Gregoire
Governer Chris Gregoire. can we help Japan? I am not asking too much but I am wondering if you could help. Could you come up with people who are willing to send the victums sympany cards or just one phone call to cheer up...

This will be a long term effort. The US military has many troops in Japan, Okinawa, South Korea and South East Asia.

One thing the US also needs to do is apologize for the war crime of the fire bombings of Japanese cities and the two nuclear bombs during WWII.

I was hearing that shit the other day as well. Today is the anniversary of the Tokyo fire bombings....*Stern look* you should know this date! As if the Japanese know the dates of all the massacres they committed in around Asia. They love that victim position....

JR East's site has, at the moment, no info on service today. Yay.

As for the rolling blackouts, they wouldn't be necessary if East and West Japan used the same frequencies. I understand the disparity dates from the Meiji Era, but it could've been rectified over the years since then. So now we've got intermittent outages, just like India.

Snow in the forecast for Sendai tomorrow.

A friend from Nagano on another board says: "Just got a lovely, panicked filled email from the Nagano foreign community asking us to stock up on food and water in case the wind shifts and blows stuff from the reactors our way and we all have to sit inside our houses."

Air France is the historical national carrier.

The ambassy advise que get the fuck out and then close its doors.

It's -sort of- a fall of Saigon setup (hopefully with less commie threat, and for us it was called Dien Bien Phu anyway...).

You can't expect them to lineup C130s on the runways, but at least giving up on luxury place seats would be the minimum that could be done.

AND FOR MORE FUN NOW, J-TV is joining the gravy train with crying tarento watching pictures of the flood...

I'll tell you one thing, I would gladly take rolling black outs to having no power like we had for close to 36 hours. We are expecting snow tomorrow with a low of -8C on Wednesday. Hope they are wrong about that. Still no idea when the roads of trains will start, so no gas, no more food, no kerosene or propane.
Not much to do but sit around and wait, either for things to get back to normal, or the next big quake.
I know this might sound strange, but half the time I am sitting reading or just talking to my wife, I feel like the house is swaying, but when I check to see if anything is moving it isn't. That is the most unnerving part of this all.

were there many aftershocks after Hanshin? mine usually lasts only a few hours as well, but with all the rumbling still going on, it's not gone away yet.

There were, but I was far enough south most of the time that I didn't feel too many.
