I've also been wondering about this. I'm not skilled like yourself, but my job allows me flexibility, and I have a reasonable level of Japanese, so I was thinking about trying to help out for a week or two, just to add to available hands.

I saw this on a similar post on GP:

> The Japan Red Cross is preparing a relief plan. If you are interested in volunteering then please email info@jrc.or.jp

There was also an article on JapanProbe which talked about searching for your local volunteer centre, and contacting them.

I have been wondering about this too.

I have just tweeted asking if there is anywhere that is accepting donations of clothes for tsunami victims. There has been no reply as yet.

So if anybody has heard of a reputable organisation that is accepting clothes, I have a bunch of good warm clothes (mens, womens and newborns) that I cleaned out of our closets today ready to donate.

The Lions club dudes were collecting cash donations in Omote Sando today and so we dropped some yens with them. They are a reputable group.

EDIT: Just found a blog listing some good links
SaraJeans Notes

Mostly about cash donations at this stage. Nothing about volunteering or physical goods donations. But I will keep my eye on this blog and others and repost anything that might be useful.

It's a bit early for donations of physical goods yet - going by the Nagano quakes & the cyclone here those donations usually happen later when they can be processed and moved. Right now it's still about search & rescue and immediate safety.

Money is helpful anytime of course.

I wouldnt donate anything. Thats what you pay taxes for. At any rate they will just force you to 'donate' by adding som kind of levy. Just like that red-headed bitch running Australia at the moment.

A lot of people are pissed off here, that they donated, and now getting smashed with an extra tax. Many are saying they'll think next time before 'donating'.

I only look after my family. Fuck everyone else.

I'm actually a very good neighbour. I don't play load music, don't have drunken parties, keep my house looking perfect. I don't bother them, and they don't bother me! Must say, I'm very happy where I'm living now.

I think that unless you have a license to operate heavy contruction equipment, or are a electrician, or a helicopter pilot I'm not sure there is much that most of us can do right now. There will be longer term needs and when they become apparent I am sure I will do what I can, but donating your expired medicine and Gary Glinter world tour t-shirts ain't gonna help.

Miyagi Prefecture's Disaster Volunteer Interpreter program might also be a place in need of help. They say they aren't currently accepting applications for Disaster Volunteer Interpreters, but that's a year out of date, so it's worth a shot...

Will the Japanese launch an official government earthquake relief fund? Or is it likely to be mainly The Red Cross and other NGO groups?? I will be making a decent donation as soon as the main fund becomes clear. In the meantime I am helping to counsel some of our Japanese exchange students here in NZ; some who are from the tsunami-hit area who have recently come to us from Christchurch (what can you say to them though?). Its always hard to watch these tragedies from afar (or closer) and you wish you could do more.

I had to go to 4 different stores before I finally found some pasta and instant carbonara sauce. There was no rice, bread, or noodles at the first three places I went and only a few packs of pasta left at the store I found it at.

If anybody happens upon an organization needing baby supplies, clothes, strollers, high-chairs, toys, etc. (really the whole bit our son just turned 4 and we've got it all) please post to this thread. Been meaning to sell it all on yahoo but this seems a much much better way to use it. I will too post of course if I find more info.

I contacted a couple of NGO's today about helping on the ground. If not this disaster, at least I'll be connected and ready for the next. Will post here any info I receive back from them.
