Gilbert is know for crossing the line regularly so it's not surprising. He's made holocaust jokes, called Obama a nigger and made jokes about Robin Quiver's molestation by her father at the Joan Rivers roast. The only surprise is that Aflac has kept him on this long.

Prime Minister Kan will be addressing the nation shortly. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he won't be doing it from an underground bunker or from a plane flying away from the capital.

Seaweed contains Iodine. Eat lot's of seaweed. Put seaweed in everything. I asked my girlfriend if there was seaweed cheese and she said there probably was so I guess I'll be OK.

* evacuation zone around Fukushima #1 increased to 30kms
* Prime Minister Kan says there has been a high amount of radiation released thus far, and more is expected.

Miso, as a heavy metal chelator, helps protect against the effects of radiation as well.

I wish I could send my Gamma Scout to one of you guys as a loaner (cost me over $500 AUD!) It will alarm when radiation gets over a certain level so you dont have watch it all the time.

Detectors showed 11,900 microsieverts of radiation three hours after the blast, up from just 73 microsieverts beforehand, Kinjo said. He said there was no immediate health risk because the higher measurement was less radiation that a person receives from an X-ray. He said experts would worry about health risks if levels exceed 100,000 microsieverts.

Its a different ball game then a chest xrays. If you get a few of these particles in your lungs, you glow in the dark for years, something that isnt possible with chest x-rays. I'd be leaving dodge asap if the wind changes direction.

For all you math geeks

At about half a sievert to a sievert, the effects of radiation sickness can be felt. A portion of the red blood cells are temporarily wiped out, and sperm in the testes are deprived of their ability to fertilize an egg until they are recreated. Mild headache and loss of focus temporarily occur.

In radiation exposures ranging from about one sievert to two sieverts, permanent effects, or mild radiation poisoning, begin. Most people experience mild nausea, sometimes accompanied by vomiting, which lasts for about a day. A feeling of general illness persists for a week or two.

Just to let you know, my geiger counter is currently displaying 0.11-0.14 micro S/h which is 57,000 times lower than what they are saying. Make no mistake, it's getting serious now.

I feel kind of sorry for those 50 or so workers who have to stay. I guess they're protected but even though they could be risking their lives. On top of that they're under a lot of pressure to fix the problem.

My coworker and I just checked at a drug store and with his nurse wife. Or course the pills aren't available OTC. His wife gave the same advice about eating seaweed by the way.

God do I hate this pseudo-science reporting. Of course it's the fucking "largest accident of its kind since the Chernobyl disaster 25 years ago". It's the ONLY accident of its kind, so naturally it's the largest by default. They are trying to make this sound like it is similar to Chernobyl, when in fact it has virtually nothing in common. Especially when it comes to the likely effect on the environment and our health.

Just figured I'd post a link to a very well written and informative post on the Nuclear Plant Situation over on the Something Awful forums (of all places to find calm, logic and reason. Of course the thread later degenerates into the same nonsense as always, but the first FAQ post is brilliant).

I don't think this was posted before, but it may have been hidden in one of those horrendous short link things so many people seem to love for unfathomable reasons.

Quoting this... probably the best and most balanced source on the web right now for info on the nuclear situation.

Too bad what he's saying right now is not at all good.

True. Posted that mainly as news on the evacuation of workers.
