If it gets worse you wont be the only one with the same idea. Basically in a full blown panic there wont be an escape by cars, bus, train, but only if you walk or ride a push bike. You can do 100km a day if you wanted to.

The geiger counter shown is home-made from a kit, which he says may or may not be accurate. Looking good so far though.

Just checked at a few drugstores and dispensaries, and as others have said, potassium iodide isn't available OTC.

Making plans to send the wife and kid down south to stay with family or friends for a few days.

I can already see those same people who panicked and bought out the entire supermarket for 6 months worth of toilet paper supplies and tissue paper to jerk off in trying to get their hands on the iodine pills (if they even exist in the first place).

The guy who is streaming the geiger counter listed these 3 measurement sites for regional areas. I can only get the Niigata one to connect though.

Potassium Iodide

Postby cstaylor » Tue Mar 15, 2011 1:39 pm

I think you mean potassium iodide pills: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_iodide

You can order them online from the U.S., but you really shouldn't take them unless instructed by the authorities. They only help against radioactive iodine (I-131).

More information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radioactive_iodine

The US Military has found no evidence in the area of Tokyo, specifically Yokota AB.

So very true. It must be difficult for those of you in Japan to know what the truth is - its pretty much impossible outside of Japan. Our media are taking extreme liberties with how they are reporting the situation. Of course they are reporting things far more negatively than they have actually been confirmed as.

Thanks. They've got plenty of friends and family around Hamamatsu, so I think we're good. Thank you very much for the offer, though.

From what I know, they get paid a shit load for the job obviously and they have crazy shifts (like an hour max)so they don't exceed the dangerous radiation levels. It sounds like a dream job but hell I wouldn't want to do it.

I just heard a commentator who seemed a bit fed up by other members of the media trying to make this in to a new Chernobyl disaster, or worse, say that since nuclear energy had been begun, there had only been seven total fatalities at work in the reactor business. There had already been 27(?) in the newly founded wind powered energy field. I don't know, maybe they were hit by propellors. Apparently, most of the info was from here......

Well, I ain't glowing in the dark yet, so must still be okay here.

I heard that with one of the steam valves they used 90 people on 8 second shifts to get it open.
