I heard that right after the earthquake some inscrupulous investors sold all their shares in insurance companies and used the cash to buy shares in construction companies. The point is, I can't feel that sorry for investors. They know the risks they are taking (usually with other people's money).

I don't know... people are going to need new houses, cars, boats, goats. They will have to reach into their savings jar. For Japan as a whole this has been a disaster financially but there will be individual businesses that benefit from it (e.g. taxi companies in Tokyo)

Yup, after the '95 quake in Kobe there was a massive construction boom. It will be even bigger this time around as there is far more damage. Even in areas not being discussed right now there is a lot of damage -- Urayasu in Chiba for example has many houses that have partially sunk and are now at odd angles. Reclaimed land for the win... :(

I know of at least one Toyota-shi based company that is going to have supply issues. Not everything built in Aichi is made in Aichi.

FujiTV is reporting that reactor 4 has a big hole. Two questions how do they know since there is a 30km no flu zone, and why are they the only ones reporting it? It might be true but I fear this scare mongering news style will put a lot of people over the edge!

If the info on the previously posted link ( http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3396817 ) is correct, it appears reactor #4 shut down safely, but the building caught fire when #3 exploded. And, since they were storing spent fuel rods in the #4 building, fire be bad...

From Kyodo:

URGENT: Fukushima's spent nuke fuel pool may be boiling, reducing water level

TOKYO, March 15, Kyodo

Water in a pool storing spent nuclear fuel at the No. 4 reactor that caught fire Tuesday morning at the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant may be boiling, causing the water level to drop, an official of Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.

The reactor was not in service when a magnitude 9.0 earthquake jolted Fukushima Prefecture and other areas in northeastern Japan on Friday, the official in charge of the facility said.

I'm not in the military, not even from the same country, but very good official info.

Matches what UK gov't is saying: no need to evacuate Tokyo and areas north.

Just hearing that construction companies are scrambling to buy as much timber as possible to secure construction bids. Also is it true each household who lost their homes is getting 3mil from the gov?

I think they stocked up on masks and Contac so they should be good.

On a more serious note, they seriously need to rethink reporting the news in a non-biased, objective way instead of scaremongering and creating drama.

i flew out of narita a few hours ago, they definitely sustained some damage, some broken windows, overhead lights and ceiling fixtures coming loose, shops damaged.
it's a bit chaotic there, they keep saying all the flights are full, but the one i was on had open seats (lufthansa narita-tokyo, which has now been diverted to seoul, then on to frankfurt after a 7 hour layover). they also have been telling people not to go to narita looking for a flight, only go if you have a ticket. the usual passport inspection on the friendly limo bus also came with a ticket check. i took the bus from a shinjuku hotel at 0825, and it arrived at narita at 0950. there was no traffic along the way.

think there's a lot of misinformation going out though. i was told by lufthansa last night that the reason for diversion to seoul is because narita is not allowing the A380 to land or take off right now, but when i got there, the SingAir double decker was backing away from the gate.

if you are trying to get out though, there IS space on flights.

The question is not when to run but when is it acceptable to start looting (which is the expected behavior of foreigners in times of crisis).

Pretty sure that was posted somewhere earlier in this thread (I know I saw it somewhere...) but they have added a second page which wasn't there before:

[quote](Reuters) - Japan's nuclear safety agency said on Tuesday there were two holes of 8-metres square in a wall of the outer building of the quake-hit Fukushima Daiichi No.4 reactor after a blast in the morning. This is classic. One site reports holes in the containment (major fucking disaster) and another reports holes in the outer building walls (yawn).

Personally I suspect it's probably holes in the outer wall and not the containment but I guess we'll find out one way or another in a day or so.

Link? And was that upgrade one reported by the BBC or was it the "upgrade" that's been reported by the French?

If I understood the guy on NHK right a bit ago, it wouldn't matter if the holes were in the outer walls (I believe they also said it was the outer walls btw.) Because #4 had just finished being tested and the rods were actually in another holding pool outside of the core.

If someone else saw that interview they may be able to clarify better, I had a 4 year old in my ear half the time.

French nuclear agency says Fukushima nuclear accident is level 6 on INES scale - Kyodo

Follow SkyZeLimit on twitter. Source is inside Chubu / 3DF. Not necessarily the most serious guy. But when he pack and leave that means we can kiss ou asses good bye.

QUAKE HERE JUST NOW.
