ntt stormtrooper annoyances

Postby kotatsuneko » Fri Aug 29, 2003 12:48 pm

the ntt nazi's came round the other day, and fitted in adsl

yup, in our area adsl!

edit.

an engineer came round, we asked him if there was a problem , he said in our area adsl was no problem at all! so i guess they were just trying to push optical..

anyhow, he was a bit of an awkward old git, didnt bother testing our ip tel out, and said afterwards that we couldnt have a 24 meg line, and mumbled some excuse out.. on his sheet was our details in red, with "free installation" underlined so we think possibly they are being nasty..

there was a hassle with making ip phone calls abroad, so some red nosed engineer came round the next morning, too old and clueless, so he was sent away, his controller realised he was either incompetent or still drunk , so an hour later the section manager and an engineer came round, eyebrows were raised at the manic data light - i was dl service pack for xp finally, and they didnt seem to like that light flashing so i cancelled the download

they couldnt get the ip phone to work, so they wanted to connect their laptop to my deck, which i wasnt pleased about, actually i didnt know until i heard their laptop booting up, i was in another room, thankfully my firewall blocked them, the wife said they tried poking about the computer and didnt even ask the rude fucks.. they made some excuse about wanting to copy the data records from the modem.. wasnt having any of that, so they went outside and jiggled around, came back and it was ok, but they said not to download too much as it "wasnt good for the line, and might interfere with the ip phone"...

the night before, i was getting 60/80k downloads, a few hours after they came round, that dropped off to around 30/40 so i think the cunts may have throttled my b/w..

at the mo the line is showing 100.00 mbits speed in network connections, i wish i had checked it at the time of installation...

this is obviously a lot slower than the 24 meg line we were promised, and ill have to wait till the first bill comes in to show what speed they are charging us for..

what really bugs me is poodling around on bloody isdn for 10 months when they could have just plugged in adsl from the very beginning...

what speeds are you lot getting btw? and is this level of hassle normal?

No installer ever gets to touch my machine. Ever.

I always enjoy it when the KT techs come to do my DSL work. I've yet to have one that's seen a Mac before. They always want to know where the "Start" menu is and tell me to reboot over and over. It's gotten to the point now that I just repeat "DHCP or PPPoE?" until the tell me which one. Then I configure it, don't reboot and show them that it's working fine. Stumps 'em every time.

The only exception was when I signed up for the WiFi service. That normally requires the installation of a Windows logon app to access the servce, but they worked around that by adding my WiFi card's MAC address to the system permanently. Hmmm, I may still have access.... :)

(I can only hope that the Japan techs are slightly more Mac-savvy when I get there.)

NTT can support Mac and ADSL. In general, Japanese ADSL is half the price, three times the speed, somewhat better support than the US. For the Mac, Yahoo BB and NTT ADSL both install under an English OS X (or OS 8.x) no sweat BUT the config screens come up in Japanese only. Manual configuration of course can be done in an all English environment. For the tech challenged, there are several English-only, 3-rd party tech support and installers available in Kanto.

That's good to know. Do you know what their attitude on routers and home networks is? Some ISPs try to get more cash from subscribers by charging for extra IPs, and frown on routers since they're a nice workaround to that.

Optical is better :D 100mbit up and down.. I love it. I've had 1.5mbit, 8mbit, and 12mbit..

I got optical installed for free, normally runs you 27800 yen.. :D Got the ONU (it's basically a fiber modem), and didn't let them install shit.

I told my wife to tell them that I would handle it, and I just wanted them to run the wires.

I checked the modem, all lights flashed once, plugged in my cables, configured my crap router, and away she went. :D
Never let them touch your PC.. if they screw it up, they'll just leave and not come back.. :D

And NTT allow 5 connections per IP with Fiber..
:D

Serious speeds I'm getting with Fiber:

5-7 MBytes per second..

With 8mbit ADSL i was averaging less than 2mbits per second.. not the 8 that they tout... and the upload was hideous.. it was about 300-500kilobits... really crap uploads with ADSL.
