I don't know if this is the answer, but they were complaining that PM Kan won't ask the self defense force to do this. Any reason why he wouldn't ask them for help in this case.
Also I heard that even though TEPCO owns the site, it is run by a bunch of subcontractors, and that there is a real breakdown in information. This from my student who works for Tohoku Denryoku, who said the same situation goes on at all nuclear plants.

I've checked Jane's Air Launched Weapon guidebook lately and there was no ordnance available for water delivery...

If they are going to start pouring shit onto the reactor buildings they're probably better off using sand, lead, and boric acid like ended up being done at Chernobyl.

Anyone have a source for the reactor 3 fire news?

Just wanted to say thank you to all the workers trying to overcome the disaster at the power plants. These workers will inevitably die as a result of their heroism.

This. There seem to be layer-upon-layer of contractors and subcontractors at these sites all over Japan, with the staff at the very bottom being sandwich-sign wearers recruited with a bottle of shochu by the yaks; it was poor bastards like those who were burned to death by a steam rupture in a Kansai nuke plant.

It's been quite a while since the mysterious ways of the internet first brought me to this forum and I've been lurking ever since. I know this is gonna sound shallow but after reading through all of those threads with your funny anecdotes, everyday problems and also some plain old silly shit (OK, I have to admit there were some really serious and insightful things too) I found myself wondering if you fucked gaijin were alright in this whole fucked up thing that is happening in J-land right now.

I wish you and your friends and families all the best of luck, stay safe!

(I'm sorry, English isn't my first language, I hope I got the message across anyway.)

Again, I hope you're all gonna be OK,

Feel free to add more to this list if you wish.

How did JR East fuckup? The entire railway line and especially the tunnels had to be checked by hand after such a big earthquake. I personally don't want to jump on the Tokaido running at 120km/h only to find the track ahead is bent out of shape. They had the trains running the next morning, pretty good for such a massive spread/track.

1) DoCoMo, Softbank, AU and any other fiberoptic telephone providers on the other hand can go suck a fat one after the massive fail of service for two days after the quake. Seriously thinking of having a Thuraya for backup or some other forms of communication.

2) People in general panic-buying from gas stations and supermarkets and conbinis. Idiotic obasans stocking up on two years worth of toilet paper and shit just goes to show how unprepared people are.

/end rant.

Little though... back in the 90' the SCPRI (french nukular emergency task force) and plenty others agencies were shock full of intervention robots ready to intervene. Today we got drones flown from somewhere in nevada blowing shit up some camel jokey ass in Afgawarajirilistan and here in japan we have to send joe Tanaka to take a piss on the fuel rods to cool them down. There is something clearly wrong in this picture...

Next time I see Asimo i'm gunna ask him what he was doing during them meltdown... and then beat him to a pulp (internet tough guy...)

Actually, Asimo would be fried as is shown in this clip. Human robots are the only solution.

Diagrams on CNN showed the layout of the reactor buildings at Fukushima. It showed that the spent fuel rods are stored on an UPPER level in cooling chambers. These rods, reportedly, are not in sealed reactors that can contain them. The worry is that if these fires get to these chambers and the spent rods burn, Cesium will be released into the atmosphere in a major way.

I am just about to pull Bucky Jr. out of Tokyo.

I can't fucking concentrate on anything but this right now. I can only imagine what you guys there in Japan are going through.

I see weather patterns are to change by the weekend the winds will start blowing back on-shore. Time to Duct Tape the windows and doors.:(

I've turned CNN off. They're now on the 2nd hour loop repeating themselves now.:wall:

I ain't religious, but I'm praying for a miracle now.

Good to be here Cyka (and as Keith Richards would add: "It's good to be anywhere!")

Now that phone communication is semi-working, I have spoken to a couple of Japanese friends in Tokyo and Kansai who actually cried openly, both because they learned we were safe (hmm ... maybe I'm misinterpreting that ...), and due to general despair over the situation. Lots of emotion that you normally wouldn't see.

I know, I have been collecting all Chernobyl reports and documentaries for years. But once again, it's not a Tchernobyl situation. Radiation level are much lower and we sort of made quite some fooking advances on electronic shielding.
