Naming and Shaming

Postby sublight » Thu Mar 17, 2011 1:04 pm

The earthquakes, tsunamis, and nuclear emergency have brought out the best in a lot of people, but have also brought out the worst in quite a few others. Around Internet forums like Facebook and Twitter, and openly to the press, there are a significant number of individuals describing the disasters as "karma", "god's will", and "payback".

And frankly, it's starting to get on my tits.

What are your opinions on starting a "naming and shaming" list here? Serves a useful purpose? Cathartic? Or just wallowing in anger by letting the bastards get under our skin?

Looking through the Facebook posts, I notice two common threads:

1. None of them are old enough to have been affected by the Vietnam War, let alone WWII.

2. They have the spelling skills of a slow 6-year-old.

As well as the IQ of red-headed stepchild. Most are trolls, or don't know any better than to just open their mouth and spew forth whatever brain fart is happening at the moment, for that reason alone I refuse to join FaceBook.

So far, the only two I've seen that are worth calling out are Paul Watson and Shintaro Ishihara. Fucking douche bags.

Naming and shaming public figures who say ridiculous things and companies who take advantage of the situation is warranted (and in the case of companies, almost a public service).
Naming and Shaming individuals is a little grey though as that sort of thing can leave to vigilantism and bring out the worst in some people.
People who say really idiotic and racist things are generally not that intelligent, so I have hope that karma bites them on the ass on a regular basis.

Has the disaster been blamed on the homosexual community yet? There was a whole website blaming the CHCH quake on NZ's liberal attitude towards lesbians...

No point. He gets off on that shit. He's lost plenty of work over the years.

Plus I think he's generally pretty funny.

This asswipe has already been named & shamed numerous times by numerous groups, but as he feels no shame...

A caller asked Limbaugh, "If these are the people that invented the Prius, have mastered public transportation, recycling, why did Mother Earth, Gaia if you will, hit them with this disaster?"

Limbaugh called this an "interesting question," and played a clip of ABC's Diane Sawyer reporting from a shelter in Japan. In the clip, Sawyer is surprised that the refugees in the shelter have maintained a recycling program. Limbaugh first mocked Sawyer, doing an impression of her and saying that "she sounds like she saw her husband for the first time in six months." He then turned to his caller's question.

"He's right," Limbaugh said. "They've given us the Prius. Even now, refugees are recycling their garbage." Here, he began to laugh, continuing, "and yet, Gaia levels them! Just wipes them out!"

He's what they call a comedians' comedian. Other comedians love him because he has no limits and will joke about anything. The more people get pissed off the worse he gets.

Apparently many foreign execs have been bailing from Japan (with their families) on "business trips", while telling the Japanese staff they need to keep coming to work or risk losing their jobs. One of the companies this is rumoured to have happened at is the large US-based soft drink maker that starts with C...

My friend's a sales trader at a Japanese institution and he said the Japanese traders were making fun of the foreigners for talking about leaving. A bunch of those sames guys just happen to be taking extended vacation in South West Japan right now. Totally coincidental, I'm sure.

<gets all defensive n' shit> You better be joking, balla! Le Noob Francaise has really been earning his keep in this earthquake thread! For a person who apparently speaks English as a second language, Coligny has an uncanny ability to deploy a huge arsenal of English-language internet memes when he writes his amusing and well-informed posts.

I think most of us would adopt Coligny as our red-headed stepchild, if he could prove he is toilet trained.
