About Urayasu - I was just talking today to someone who was in Urayasu on business when the earthquake struck. He told me that a crack opened in the street and water came out, and a 7/11 partially sunk into the ground. I found it hard to believe since it is not that far from Tokyo but I didn't know that it was also on reclaimed land and prone to liquefaction....

Some parts of Urayasu are on reclaimed land and other parts are on "real" land. The parts on real land were fine -- no damage to speak of and certainly no issues with not having water or gas.

The parts on reclaimed land however are fucked. Houses partially sunk and at odd angles, roads all busted up, liquefaction everywhere (huge mud flows), power poles have sunk into the ground (sometimes several meters straight down), no water, no gas... It's nothing compared to what happened up north but it's scary to think how bad it will be when a strong quake strikes closer to Tokyo.

So far no one has mentioned the guerrilla blackout rumored to strike central Tokyo this evening. Message posted on Facebook:

"Important - NON scheduled blackout may occur tonight
Due to cold weather and high usage of power, NON schedule blackouts in may occur in Tokyo area today"

My house in Osaka isn't on reclaimed land but the land is definitely softer than I would like. I hope to move within the next couple of years and wherever I end up building it will be on top of bedrock...

Are you sitting on engineered soil or natural? Do you have access to the geotech report? If your just moving because your worried about one factor then it would definately be cheaper to get expert advice about it.

The biggest problem is that they are stored together. With enough space or shielding between them, they wouldn't be so active.

The cooling pool really should be in another location though.

Yeah but the couscoussiere concept applied to a nuke plant is over bad engineering... it's downright evil....

This just on the news:

The water canon attempt has failed. The water failed to reach the target and the intrepid police team had to retreat (aka "run away") due to the high radiation levels.

They might as well just throw water balloons at the thing from a couple of kilometers away.

EDIT: I keep hearing "due to safety concerns we can't allow our people to get too close to the reactor." In my mind that translates as "due to safety concerns we're going to allow the reactors to blow and irradiate the entire fucking country for generations to come". Nice safety country thinking there.

People had predicted that for years and it wasn't matter of if but when the big one hit. Now all those people are stuck paying 30 year loans on property homes worth dick.

I heard Disney JP stocks took a dive since Friday but I don't know if that has anything to do with being on the same reclaimed land.

For frack sake, give me 4 hours with one of these truck and I can make it remote controlled, even by fiber optic wire if it need to be interference proof.
Did nuclear radiation also give people "th3 stoopid" ?

The self-defense forces are now having a go at reactor #3 with a "special" fire-fighting truck thingy. Hope they're more coordinated than the cops.
