Sleeping Methods: An Inquiry

Do you sleep on a futon, bed, couch, lawn chair, floor, or hammock in Japan?

Just wondering. At first I hated floor futon. But now it is not so bad. Just wondering what your sleep environment is like. I still miss my serta bed with pillow top.

i've got a stack of about 5 or 6 futons that i sleep on. it still sucks. i miss my bed.

i'm just too poor (and lazy) to buy one, not to mention my bedroom is about the size of a small sardine can...

I slept on the damn futon for more than 8 years as a student in the States and now I can afford to live like a human ((although I have to say that weird-ass Korean hot floor futon is rather comfy in the winter...until you die of CO poisoning)).

My entire Japanese family sleeps on beds... futons are only nice if you have a sardine can room like BB.

Any hammock humpers out there? I use dual futons, stacked on a hard tatami mat. Ode to the bed how I miss thee..

As a student I crashed quite often in the fraternity house living room couch... too drunk to walk home..

My son and I visited the out-laws in Japan and we slept on a futon for a few days. Very comfortable and my son loved the experience. Although the whole out-law family sleeps on beds.

Finally back to a bed after 5 years on a futon.

But my best sleeping experience was on a futon in a ryokan in Chiba - honestly it was like lying back and sleeping in a cloud...

The CO situation isn't nearly the problem it used to be. You only find charcoal based ondol (floor heating) out in the sticks, and then only in older homes. Every place I've ever stayed in Korea has hot water based ondol. It's quite nice, but if you're not careful you can turn it up waayyyy too high.

Sleep? What's sleep? I think I'm mostly awake for 23 hours out of the day now. That last hour I usually spend on those Izakaya cushions.

I've got a sweet, Otsuka Kagu double bed with down-filled pillows and a Tempur-pedic pillow that molds to the shape of my noggin. Of all the furniture at my place, I think I spent the most on my bed. After all, we spend more hours of our lives in bed than anywhere else, right?

I get about 4-5 hours of sleep daily.. the rest spent at work, walk the dog, do the PC crap, watch the tube, etc..

My wife and I sleep on a double futon. I use lots of 'towelkets' even in the summer. We use those pillows full of hard plastic cylinder things wrapped in a towel. I think baths and bedding are much nicer in Japan than in America. I have had a problem with insomnia this past year. Probably from drinking too much. The doc gave me some pills that would knock King Kong out! They must be what qualludes were like. I know what you're thinking...'That's a good way to shuffle off this mortal coil, AssKissinger!' In the winter I keep an electric blanket under me. Something I realized in Korea is that heat really does rise.

the futon has to be of good quality to be good for your body and for your sleep. if it is too soft, it is the best way to wake up everyday with a backache...

Since we built our house and finally had room for a bed, we splurged and got a queen size. Before in our small mansion all we could have were futons. Not bad, but I find as I get older its harder to get off the floor. Also I find futons for kids are not good. Yes they can roll around and not worry about falling off. But when we took our kids to Hawaii and put them into a bed, my son who does gymnastics while sleeping fell out of the bed and cracked his collar bone. Needless to say kind of ruined the rest of the holiday. Now the kids have beds but we have sides to keep them in. Don't hear of that too much in North America.

A futon in the loft. I like it. On the whole I prefer to sleep in a bed, but I just don't have the space.

Thin-ass futon. I can sleep on it, but it is nowhere near as comfy as my couch in my stateside apartment.

The Japanese have a great term for "Thin-ass futon". They call it sembei futon, that is, as thin and hard as a sembei rice cracker. In the same vein, I used to joke about my so-dai gomi futon as not being sembei futon but a natto futon because it was nice and mushy-soft as well as green and damp since I never ever hung it out.

Futon. Have been sleeping on futon since young anyway. I can sleep anywhere, couch, futon, bed, sleeping bag, wooden floor/bench, card board etc. I can sleep well too when travelling in a bus, in the plane etc, with or without pillow is ok, but preferbly with a blanket, and at least 7-8 hours for night sleep.

futon user. ironically, everytime I'm in japan, I wind up with a traditional mattress bed. I prefer a traditional bed, but they eat up too much space in these tiny new york apartments. plus, there'll be time enough to sleep when I'm dead.

...hmmm, thanks to my awesome unlimited JR Pass, I noticed I sleep better on the shinkansen than on the sembei futon (thanks Taro). Maybe it is because the AC is better on the train.....

I switched to a bed after about 10 years on a futon.
The bed arrived in winter and the first night slept with one less blanket. Much cooler in summer too which is nice because I don't like to run the aircon at night.
