On the sidenote, who would want to name their child Ikuko? I can understand the name Aiko translates to "love child" so would Ikuko be "coming child"? Or "Go".. ah nihongo mendokuse-

Buses are running from Shinjuku to Sendai.

But if you're really serious the best bet would probably be to visit your ward office and see if they can point you in the right direction. There are numerous volunteer centers set up, but there's no point in showing up cold somewhere where you'll just be seen as another mouth to feed. Your ward office might refer you to the Red Cross, a welfare center, or somewhere else where your help would be most needed and appreciated.

Yeah, as a general rule it's not a good idea to just show up to a disaster zone to volunteer. More often than not you'll just get in the way.

Almost all of my FG and J friends have fled the country or headed to Western Japan. A lot of my favorite watering holes are closed or operating on limited menus too. I bet it's a good time to find a lonely scared girl who couldn't leave and needs some protecting.

I think whether or not people are leaving depends on their company. In my case my boss went back to his jikka a couple of days ago, the office is closed and the company is partially subsidizing travel.

WTF? Somebody red snotted me for this post and left the following comment:

What's your (ex)girlfriend's number, loser?

That doesn't even make sense. There are some wierdos on this board.

edit: Oh, I get it. Someone was offended by the comment about lonely girls needing protection. That might have hurt if I had a girlfriend I'd left behind.

Friend of mine in the US military (based in Okinawa) received that mail this morning from her in response to the voluntary evac effort. As to the facebook profile, the name matches, and she is in the network "Unites States Navy" so likely her. I tried to add her...we'll see what happens.

[edit] confirmed, it's her

She intentionally sent this to my boy in Okinawa. (we all know how much some people love having the military bases there) In his words, "The main problem for me is that she is a base worker for facilities. Why work on base if you hate us? "

Yeah, that is fucking weird. She must really hate herself. I can totally understand why in principle people don't like having foreign military bases in their country regardless of the reason they're there. But actually working for the "man" doesn't make any sense unless you're a spy which she obviously isn't. Your buddy ought to send that to whoever in HR is in charge of hiring local civilians.

I'm staying, because I really don't think it is going to be as bad as everyone fears, and this has become my second home, and I can't just leave everybody who can't leave in the lurch. I was here for the good times and will be hear for the tough times.
Again, this is not a criticism of your decision, just my feeling.

I know the hoarding is causing the shortages but is that the only reason or is it also because of disruptions in the distribution chain?

My company is still running, we are working from home via email and only going in if absolutely necessary.

We have no trouble getting diapers and our groceries were delivered as usual. Japan imports 60% of its food anyway, this is just a logistical problem made worse by panic buying.

Things will be more or less back to normal for most of us by July.

If anything good comes out of this it will be people will waste less electricity, maybe JR will learn they don't have to put all the lights on along the platform in broad daylight, and shops will learn neon is not vital, and that dick who lives by the park near my house might actually realise they don't need blue fairy lights strung around their house.

From what I heard the oil refineries were down for awhile as well and a bunch of other manufacturing. (Probably true as the news is showing manufacturers in western Japan working 24hours compared to the usual 8 hours, to meet demand.) Keep in mind how most Japanese normally shop (and the inventory maintained to meet that) and then add hoarding and you have a messy (but temporary) problem.

It's March which means it's contract renewal time at the bases. I suspect you'll find that whatever contractor she was working for (there are many on each base) has lost their contract to a competitor and she will therefore no longer have a job after the end of this month.

HEY, Milk is an essential ingredient! :coffee:

(Im currently accepting donations. :bukkake: )

And the reason I didnt get the re entry at the time is because I applied for permanent residency (yes thats right, FG for life) and didnt want to pay twice for re entry. (once for my current visa and again for the permanent visa)

And i wasnt planing on leaving Japan this spring.
