Now the pressure is on other Japanese athletes to ante up.

Ichiro Suzuki hasn't wanted to speak openly about the devastation in Japan. But any thought that he is ambivalent about what is going on in his native land should end today with the news that he's donated $1.3 million dollars to the Japanese Red Cross to aid efforts in Japan, according to Kyodo

Will somebody please stop the Huffington Post from writing these horrific headlines painting Japan as on the brink of a nuclear holocaust.

Showing photographs taken to simulate the post Hiroshima blast photos is about as low as I have ever seen scumbag reporters go (and I've seen some low scumbag reporters)

Hmm ... just did the calcs and I'm about 70.5 km from the Fukushima nuke plant.

Ah well, that's more than double Japan's announced exclusion zone.

Except most of the deaths are due to the tsunami, I believe. And, yes, the tsunami was caused by the earthquake.

I think that it speaks volume that a country as densely inhabitted as Japan is getting hit by the largest earthquake recorded in modern times and a tsunami of biblical proportions and yet, at most 10,000 people lost their lives, many of whom were lederly. In any other country the deathyn toll would be several times that.

Does anybody have any information on how long the shinkansen will be down? That is one thing I haven't heard anything about. All I know is that the Kosoku is still closed and the trains are not running, but we haven't been given a time frame as to when these things will be back on line. Meaning we are still basically cut off. Mind you a grain ship was able to dock and unload for the first time, so that is a little good news.

Yes, as a matter of fact. I almost feel guilty.

I think we're going to have to wait a while for the Shinkansen. Maybe a month or more (just guessing of course). I hear the rails are doing their best to impersonate a pretzel in some places. Didn't it take about two months to get the Joetsu Shinkansen going after the Niigata quake?

Depend, do you want a summary of the suspension duration split by events ?

Quake damage; Tsunami damage; radiation -supposed- risk ?

FUN FACT, shinkansen and local railways don't have the same width (shikansen is 1435mm european standard, others are around 1m) therefore, if one line is damaged, you can't reroute temporarily through the other one. Might not help for fuel train supply as these fret lines are usually a bit more exposed to doom and gloom... (like if the 50-60Hz discrepancy was not fun enough to begin with...)

Wow, young guy pulled out of house 8 days after the earthquake and tsunami. Taking him to Kesenuma hospital, but he wasn't able to speak. Can:t believe this guy survived this long in the wet and cold.

He probably was well insulated under all the rubble, and must have had access to a bit of water.

Oh no! This guy lied about spending 9 days in the ruble! He had already spent time in a shelter and went back to his house for only one night. How could he do that to other families who are holding out hope against hope that their love ones could be found alive. He is just as bad as the people preying upon elderly people to turn in their gold and valuables to help pay for rescue and rebuilding. Do these people have no conscience?

Could easily be that the rescuers assumed he had been there all that time. It would be a logical assumption really, especially if the guy was in bad shape when they found him.

I understand that Cranky, and I'm sure there are so many people suffering from anxiety, stress, you name it. But I just feel bad for people who may have got false hope for their own loved ones still being alive and possibly rescued.
