It could just be that the SG folks are on a different grid. When I lived in Atlanta we once lost power for 5 days due to a hurricane. Pretty much eveyone else in our area got power days before we did because even though we were in the same neighborhood we were on a different grid that short of jutted out into the middle of our neighbors.

FG Lurker wrote:I recommend buying a good UPS. Dell sells a variety of APC models that should give you enough time to safely shut down your computer. Here's one for smaller office computers or POS systems that will probably do well. There are a couple of larger models if your machine sucks a lot more juice, but of course the price climbs quickly as the rated power goes up.
Next I recommend downloading and installing CrashPlan. Get an external hard disk and have it back up to that so you have near-line backup in case of disk failure. If you have a few computers you want to back up you can have them back up to each other instead of using an external hard disk. Get their "Family Plan" which is $120/year and lets you back up a max of 10pcs to their off site locations. CrashPlan only takes a few minutes to download and install and the backups thereafter are totally automatic. More than worth the peace of mind.
ttjereth wrote:CrashPlan looks nice, but unfortunately online backup services aren't an option for me. The ridiculous amount of data I have makes offsite backup very time consuming and impractical (although most of it doesn't change very often, so it would mostly be a one time thing) and contractually I'm prohibited from having the vast majority of my work stuff stored on any of those types of services.
FG Lurker wrote:I have a few hundred gigs of photos stored on CrashPlan. It took quite some time for the initial backup to run but since then it hasn't been a big deal.
With CrashPlan you can make "backup sets" to decide what gets backed up to where. You could back up your personal data to offsite backup & to a local PC but have it back up your business data only to another local PC or to an external hard disk. I'm in no way affiliated with CrashPlan but have found it to be very flexible and it provides me with great peace of mind.

Heh.. actually I highly doubt that.
