Just heard via the grapevine that Marc Morgenrood has passed away. Marc was originally from South Africa, was a very active sportsman and was the Business Development Manager at Santa Fe Relocation Services.

I don't have any other details other than there is a "farewell" at Hobgobblins pub on Saturday 22nd Jan from 6:30pm.

This is kinda old, but I did not find mention of this fellow in the archive.

Roger Boisvert, a Canadian entrepreneur who became a phenomenally successful Internet pioneer in Japan, was murdered in Los Angeles on Sept 30, 2001. He was 50.

After taking a wrong turn off an L.A. highway at 4 a.m., Mr. Boisvert stopped to seek directions and was fatally shot during a robbery.

The St. Catharines, Ont.-born entrepreneur founded of Global OnLine Japan Co., Ltd. (GOL), the country's first commercial Internet service provider. He started it in 1994 in a cramped apartment, with borrowed money and all the cash he could squeeze out of his credit cards. By 1998, according to Business Insight Japan Magazine, GOL was worth between $40-million and $70-million (U.S.). Mr. Boisvert sold it to Exodus Communications, Inc. in 1999.

Holy shit, I never knew that. Talk about having your luck run out. :(

I guess it never got mentioned on FG as his death actually predates the site by about 6 months.

He was a rare, truly nice guy. He was selfless.

When the old Ministry of Post and Telecommunications repeatedly turned him down for licensing, he used simple common sense and his natural charm to ask the bureaucrat how he would write the application to get it approved. The man did it and he was on his way.

I kept up with the police investigation, like others, and as far as I know, there was never an arrest made. Roger was in the passenger seat. He gave the robber his wallet and his ketai (no use in the US) with no resistance, then was shot once in the chest as the robber fled.

They were looking at the car navigation system, not asking for directions, when the robber approached the car. Roger was with a partner in the venture capital business (he was not injured) and they couldn't sleep after arriving from Japan, so they decided to drive early to the hotel where they had a breakfast meeting scheduled.
Eh?

The Sankei reports (Japanese) that a "foreign-looking" woman in her 20s or 30s was stopped by police for questioning in Osaka. They asked to see her passport and she said it was at home. The police began to accompany her back home to see it when she suddenly ran away from them into the road. She was hit by a car and killed.

LOL, WTF?

"Foreign looking" is always funny to hear, most Japanese can't tell the difference between other Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, etc.

I came across this obit for Tura Satana in Time Magazine this morning. I really did not know of her. She was born in Hokkaido.
ImageImage

Tura Satana had the biography to back up her grit. Born Tura Luna Pascual Yamaguchi in Hokkaido, Japan, in 1938 (or 1935), from a Japanese-Filipino father and a Cheyenne-Scots-Irish mother, she was interned with other Japanese-Americans in a California camp during World War II. She played bits as strippers and whores in such Hollywood films as Irma La Douce and Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed? before getting her big chance in Pussycat and making the most of it. Her face is a rigid Kabuki mask of predatory sensuality, her deep voice clipped and authoritative, her figure a series of dangerous curves, her long stride that of a wartime general masquerading as a runway model. She wasn't a sex object called upon to act; she was the total package of commanding movie presence and acting chops. Seeing Satana here, you'll wonder why she didn't find a deep Hollywood niche, at least as a character actress. But neither Meyer nor any director of his stature used her again. Pussycat was her one shot at immortality, and her aim was true.

And from Wikipedia:
Tura Satana (July 10, 1938 – February 4, 2011) was a Japanese-born American actress and former exotic dancer. She was best known for her role as "Varla" in Russ Meyer's 1965 cult film, Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!.

Satana was born Tura Luna Pascual Yamaguchi in Hokkaidō, Japan. Her father was a silent movie actor of Japanese and Filipino descent, and her mother was a circus performer of American Indian (Cheyenne) and Scots-Irish background

Guam -
Guam Police Department Spokesman Officer A.J. Balajadia reports that the Guam medical Examiner has determined that the death of Mike Ghiglione was a suicide.

The autopsy was performed this afternoon [Thursday].

Ghiglione was was the Executive Director of the Center for Micronesian Empowerment. He was found dead in the parking lot of the Ohana Bayview Hotel last night.

The Secretary of the Board for the Center of Micronesian Empowerment, Jay Merrill told PNC News that Ghiglione was a respected member of the community and that Ghiglione's work for the Center was "extremely important for the people of the region ... he will be sorely missed," said Merrill.

Ghiglione was in his late 50's, said Merrill, but he died not know his exact age.

He adds that Ghiglione has been on Guam for a little over 2 years. He does not have family here, but he has "a whole bunch of friends who will miss him dearly," said Merrill.

Apparently, he had previously been a resident of Japan:

Dead Pig

Postby Greji » Fri Jul 29, 2011 9:36 am

Hideki Irabu, who was once called a fat pig by the late George Steinbrenner, and previously an MLB pitcher, was found dead in an exclusive area of LA. It was apparently a suicide. No further info at this time. Irabu was 42. He was the son of a US service member and Japanese mother. I think he deserves FG status for his duo citizenship and frequent antics which brought him a lot of bad press.

Hideki was made famous following the defection of Hideo Nomo to MLB, when through Don Nomura he negotiated a contract with MLB which resulted in the revamping of the entire Japanese Pro Baseball system to keep players from going to the MLB and caused the introduction of the posting system....

He was a great pitcher in Japan and held the record for the fastest pitch thrown in a game at 159k for many years until Mark Kroon officially took it over 100mph.

He was a good power pitcher and took max heat from the J-media even when winning, mainly (I think) because he was a half.
RIP

I believe the infamous term that Steinbrenner used to refer to Irabu was "fat pussy toad" - not "pig".

Nah, I believe Georgie boy called him both a toad and a pig on separate occasions. I suppose he wanted to make sure the whole spectrum was covered.

But then again, talk about cold. This was a guy pitching for his old team, that were he to get his problems straightened out, could have become his major ace. Way to pump up the hired help George, especially when they were having problems and needed your support. No wonder he was so loved by his players. I'm sure not many Yankees were crying at his funeral.

At any rate, there is another thread on Hideki on the board, I just thought it would be nice to recognize his US half by posting it in this thread....

Which remind me to one of my university mapping assistant teacher... a 25 yo italian girl named Serena (like... th3 Datsun...) she was always running everywhere, profusely sweating and not wearing any perfume...

Her natural body odor was one of the most bonerworthy fragrance I've ever met... (this and Dune from Dior... but that's a much moar complexe story involving the Serbian-Kosovar war in the mid 90' )

Was born a "he", became a "she" - and apparently acted in an AV video or two.

Full name: Michael William NOHARA

Police arrest male lover of deceased man after corpse found in Nagano resort area

NAGANO --
Police arrested a man on Oct. 24 on charges of abandoning the corpse of his male lover who was found dead here earlier this month.

Hiroshi Ezaki, 47, is accused of abandoning the body of 37-year-old Michael William Tokuhara, who was found dead and partially skeletonized in a resort area in Nagano Prefecture on Oct. 9.

Police were led to Ezaki after they discovered that he owned the apartment Tokuhara was registered as residing at in Tokyo's Toshima Ward and questioned him about his relationship with the victim. According to police, the two were dating.

Ezaki has admitted to abandoning the body, police said. Investigators are currently questioning him for more details related to Tokuhara's death.

The victim was found dead in a resort area in Minamimaki in the prefecture on Oct. 9. His body was badly decomposed, but police were able to detect several distinctive features, such as signs of a breast implant operation and a large mermaid tattoo on his arm, that helped identify him as Okinawa-native Michael William Tokuhara.
