You'd think they'd wait until AFTER the current disaster was mostly under control.

Methinks Jakey digs a little too hard for scoops.
If it ain't official, it's just a bunch of cops sitting around speculating over coffee.

Considering driving offenses get put under "professional negligence" in Japan I can certainly see that this would qualify...

Oh, hogwash. There'll be some tearful bowing and suspended sentences. The chances of some TEPCO schmuck seeing a jail cell are about the same as Chirac seeing one.

Okay, Catoneinutica, I'll wager one  that if the DPJ survives this crisis at least one member of the TEPCO management team gets a real sentence (especially if it goes to a lay jury).

The idea that TEPCO thought to devote time and resources on any scale to produce a bit of promo sleaze like this in the midst of a crisis that is threatening the welfare of the nation makes me sick.

The order of priorities is:

1) Fix it.
2) Then say sorry.

EDIT: 3) Gracefully accept the monumental reaming you deserve.

If I were to summarize the theme of the statements coming from TEPCO/the Japanese gov't/the state-run media, it'd be something like:

"We endured the worst natural disaster since, really, since the meteor strike that ended the reign of the dinosaurs. Sure, we had some trouble, but in the end we had a nuclear incident measuring only a 5, the same as Three-Mile Island (which, it should be noted, didn't even require a natural catastrophe to induce, those Americans are so careless)."
"If there's a river, we'll dam it, and if there's a tree, we'll ram it - 'cause we Japanese are talkin' progress!"

A prediction for the near future: Company value bottoms out, taken over by new company, legal action for compensation void because Tepco no longer exists.

FWIW, and I add the disclaimer of barely able to follow anything from the looney bin, I reckon TEPCO did fucking all right by keeping the damage down to what it was. Those punters who stayed to help and the blokes microwaved to cool down those reactors are national heroes.
I, for one, am grateful to TEPCO because that fucking earthquake and tsunami could have wreaked a hell of a lot more damage than they already did.
Then again, I'm in the looney bin, so what the fuck do I know.

IMHO, the poor technicians and staff who are on the ground trying to put things back together deserve some credit. The police, fire brigade, and self-defense forces guys who basically have nothing to do with it yet are forced to put their lives on the line to pour water over someone else's problem deserve kudos as well.

That, however, isn't TEPCO. The reason the above people are in so much danger right now is that TEPCO delayed taking necessary measures, no doubt because asset protection was a higher priority than public safety.

OK, OK...agreed. The little punters got screwed again, but I stand by the argument that they are national heroes to a person.

Nonetheless, to the extent that building nuke reactors on the most seismically active cuntry on the planet is asking for trouble in the first place, I'm fucking glad that I'll at least get to die slowly and painfully with the occasional farewell fuck thrown in on the side instead of a going out in a blinding flash that won't even give me enough time to jerk myself off even at my horrendously rapid pace of premature ejaculation.

THIS...ignored warnings from inspections, forged inspection data, covered shit up...all to keep themselves afloat. They made the decision to risk that what is happening now wouldn't happen...and profit from it....without answering to anyone. J-Gov. needs to take over the industry here, too many instances that prove that it is not safe being run privately. (would be nice to pay less for energy as well!)

The company obviously has a poor track record, but having said that I think we have to wait a bit on the "responsibility" thing. Given that J-people require a sekinin for every thing that goes wrong, we do need to remember this site withstood a 9.1 quake and assorted tsunamis with only the storage pools going down because a lack of power to the pumps. Just being J-land, we can besure they will go over the whole operation with a fine tooth comb to determine who will have to committ seppuku, so we probably should not ride the media's immediate panic led search and wait for the actual results.
Just my not-so humble opinion.....

Also, seems the plant was not insured anymore since 2010 (plant itself, not -colateral- damage insurance) because the bill was deemed too high.

Yeah, but they did separate their gomi properly...except, of course, for the nuclear waste, which was a bit of a curveball for them as there is no designated day on which it can be disposed. And, er, actually now that I think of it, there's nowhere in Japan where it can be disposed. Except, perhaps, the East Sea.
