I partially agree with this. Of course I've witnessed blatant racism before, (eg. stupid drunken taunts to minority groups on a Saturday night), but I'd have to say the most sinister form I saw was when I was flat hunting. At the same time I was being shown through a place another couple arrived. The male was polynesian and the landlord barely acknowledged him. He had a professional full-time job as did the girlfriend. Whereas I was a lowly student scraping by with the help of a loan. Guess who got the apartment?

OK, so a non-white won't be able to rent that particular apartment. Does that mean he can't "live anywhere in" the country? He can get another apartment in the same neighbourhood. I know I can't get into any apartment, some landlords won't accept tenants with kids. It's also a form of discrimination... not all kids are destructive (though mine are).

Those are two completely separate conflicts. Scots want freedom to make their own decisions. The Irish question would be far easier to answer if it wasn't an internal struggle between Ulster and Belfast.

You might have mentioned this before, but how long have you stayed in Japan? Although I believe things are worsening in the States, I still feel there are more diversified sources for news than here in Japan. Can't you watch PBS, BET or some Spanish channel to get a different perspective?

Not really GJ. BET is a JOKE now. It says Black Entertainment TV. But I call it Bootycall Entertainment TV. Reasons being...

1. BET is no longer a BLACK owned station. It's owned by Viacom.
2. In recent years, it's lost its dignity and become a charicature of black american culture. It's as if some white people decided that this is what black people want to see. I rarely watch it ....just out of principle.


PBS is decent. But it doesn't offer "perspective" except if its a specific show about black culture or history.

As for Spanish TV? That's only available in certain areas. Like LA, Miami, Texas and Denver. Those are the areas that I know of. In Columbus, OH....its not available. And usually Spanish TV is IN Spanish which I am very weak at.

I just gave the example of the mentality of my folks.. not to say they are wrong or right, just to show an example. I think that is natural. I think it is natural to select your own group based on common characteristics and I also think it fine to discriminate based on the mentality of survival of the fittest. I have to go through the discrimination myself here.. and I do bitch and moan about it, but that is just how it is.

I think it important to educate people when I can concerning discrimination, but I think it will happen and is a natural way for us to preserve who we are, what we have access to etc..


I still think the racial situation would be far different had blacks not been inserted into the equation. Whites certainly would discriminate, but as you can tell now, in AMerica, the heritage one comes from has been forgotten. I think that would have still happened, but who knows really. It could have been worse.

While all that may be true, there are places where whites can't live, I cite you South Central LA, that may be an area where a white would never want to live, for fear of their life...

what would blacks be doing if american slavery had not happened? most likely they'd still have large populations in france, UK, and elsewhere, doing their thing like everyone else.

And I'd chance to say there would be more racial tensions in Europe because of it. As long as they stay out of your neighborhood, it is fine and dandy..

And there are millions of uneducated, filthy nasty whites, who steal, rob, rape and pillage.. the thing is you don't see them as much on the news as you do blacks and latinos...

You look in prisons and who is the majority? And why, of course, racial profiling must be the reason. Why else would blacks get locked up? It wasn't for doing the driveby at the church, or school.. it wasn't for selling crack on the streets, it wasn't for thuggery... they were just selected because they were black LMAO...

I do agree that whites most likely make up the largest percentage of criminals and uneducated populace.. but when you look deeper at say percent per race, the table turns.

I say this, what goes on in Japan is far worse.. it really is.. you are talking a population of 99.9% Japanese or there bouts.. versus 70% white, and 30% minority.. percents are just a guestimate.

Here, there is no opposition because nearly everyone is the same.. Racism is tolerated to maintain order.. no one wants to stir the pot here.

Hell blacks here, depending on where you live, have it worse IMHO.. sure Tokyo is another story.. but you head out to the Inaka, and while it may seem they are smiling at you... deep down, many of them hate you. Just like they hate Koreans and Chinese.. Hell they even hate whitey too..

And living here has made me more sensitive to minority issues.. I will say that I am more aware and have changed a lot based on my experiences here. I don't want blacks or latinos or asians to feel they way I do here.. I want them to fit in and enjoy, which I'd say they do more so than living in a 99.9% homogenous Japan..

Imagine, if you lived in a 99.9% white neighborhood in the states, I am sure it would be hella worse than a more diverse area.

I think PBS is great! I guess I was talking about general programming, not shows specifically about black culture. (Although I watched MLK Jr.'s entire 'Dream' speech the other day on the News Hour) They actually have great stuff on Native Americans and Latinos as well..
