You can always take a perve at last year's

Shit I'd hate to be short at an event like that.

Didn't make it this year. But, as most old-posters here have seen, TokyoDV has a video from Sangenjaya's Samba Festival 2002:

Dang, I must be getting old but fighting the 12-deep crowds, heat, subway to see the world's most modest samba costumes just doesn't have the thrill to it anymore. Having said that, the handfull of imported Brazilian pros sure did their best to completely wiggle out of their tops whenever they saw me screaming from the sidelines,
OBA OBA! (which horrifies the Japanese who confuse that Brazilian "oba-oba" happy-love yell with "obasan").

I went to that festival on Saturday. What a freakin' nightmare! There were so many people, and the crowds were rude and pushy. No clear vantage point to watch the parade. Basically wasted a Saturday afternoon.

I turned up at 2pm and yes the mass of people was nightmarish (imagine trying to navigate a pushchair through that lot 8O). But I wouldn't call it a wasted Saturday. A friendly bunch of elderly Japanese invited my wife to stand with them on a railing. She also managed to get a vantage point closer to the action on a shared step ladder (amazing what avenues clutching a cute 1 yr old can open up). I had to rely on my height, providing the FG 2yr old with a great shoulder-bourne view of the nearly bare buttocks. I found the whole thing a bit of a laugh, I'd probably go again next year (if I was here) but might try and get there a tad before it started.

From the SMH

... The annual samba carnival in Tokyo attracted hundreds of thousands of people while 4,500 samba dancers and participants paraded with floats along downtown streets in the Asakusa district. Photo: Reuters

Ok I found a http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?p=news&g=events/lf/082804japansamba&e=1&tmpl=sl] samba slideshow here of the Asakusa event.
Just a thought: Tokyo samba is very odd in the way it's ripped out context. The Asakusa Samba is at the wrong time of year, surrounded by the wrong religion and danced by very single older OLs who use the one-a-year samba as their "wild thing." The foreign sambanistas are PAID to dance and it shows.
An odd feature of the Asakusa Samba is that any FG can jump the police line and dance with sambanistas (hear that Rob Pongi) but the cops will drag away any Japanese guy who tries the same thing.
