Door to Door WTF?

Postby matsuki » Thu Mar 24, 2011 11:11 pm

So I've dealt with my share of door to door morons here in J-land but the last two nights I've had a new gremlin to deal with. Last nite, around 8:30 he came while i was a warming up a girl with some home cookin'

I heard something about fudoyasan blah blah, and i cut him off quickly with "in the middle of dinner." he quickly apologized and took his leave. Now tonight, at around 10:15, what i think is the same guy, came back. Could hear him going door to door, knocking and announcing who he was. I had the washing machine going and was about to jump in the shower...while it would have been fun to open the door in my onsen suit, there is a house with bedroom windows less than a meter from my front door so I just ignored his knocks.

Now im thinking....its past 10 pm. Pretty fucking rude to go door to door at this time of night. Is it even legal? As much as I want to get in this guys face tomorrow night about this shit, I'de like to know any relevant laws I may have to cite to the local koban if i have to drag the bastard down there tomorrow.

If he came back at 10 it sounds like he might actually have had something important to tell you. I'd give him a chance to say his piece before starting to chew him out.

I was actually reading some business docs today and it mentioned a law requiring a "cooling off" period for door-to-door sales of 8 days. That was all that was said though as it was just a summary, it may be nothing but you may want to look it up though.

We had a Yomiuri guy harass the crap outta us and were just about to call his manager when he finally stopped so I feel your pain.

The cooling off period is for if you actually buy something. You have 8 days to change your mind and return it, and I don't think there's any such thing as door to door real estate sales :)

Not in one piece, anyway...

I have a chainsaw but I've never thought of trying it out on the NHK dude. I suspect the neighbours might say something if I did.

Ah ok thanks, since it was in the context of dos and don'ts for door-to-door sales my mind just went to "leave us the fuck alone" right away. I was thinking wow thats a great law. And now that you say it it makes sense it may have been his real estate agent or the building owner, fudoyasan don't go door-to-door selling, he may have been saying something important as FG Lurker said.

Indeed...but why so late and if it was important, why not leave it in written form in our mail slots? It might not have been the same guy as the night before but the guy last night was literally going door to door. Couldn't hear what he was saying but I'm sure I'll find out tonight if he comes back.

I've never heard of door to door fudoyasan either but they do leave alot of their ads in our mailbox so who knows. Still, assuming he's a sales guy, does anyone know if there is a law about how late they can knock on your door and make sales pitches to you?

Just as a side issue, there are people that go door to door to try to get a look in the house and see what ya got worth lifting. If you got anything of interest, they'll come back when you out with a free moving service.....

I'm for the koban visit.

Yeah, that crossed my mind as well. I have a curtain separating the rooms though so no chance he could see in. I should probably pay a visit to the koban anyways and get their interpretation of the law (if any) as that's likely what they're going to do anyways.

Police are warning of an increase in earthquake scams. Here's a list of them in Japanese. I'm not suggesting you definitely have some crooks at your door - these are strange times and decent people may be acting in ways they wouldn't usually - but their m.o. does at least hint at the possibility.

Hmm, yeah, I guess I'll hear them out and act accordingly. None of my coworkers think there is any law that prevents them from coming to your door at any time....while I doubt it's that simple, I'm sure dragging them down to th koban will be fun.

You keep meeting them at the door, without buzzing in the gendarmes, so if I were looking to refurnish my Fukushima mansion, I think I'd drop by your place.....

Any sales douche which comes at night is a douche or a crook. That'S all there is to it. You ask "Are you sales?" If they look sideways, answer in a really long way or stupidly answer "yes" - you simply answer "Fuck off".

The end.

Guy was typical scrawny J-Salaryman lookin' guy that could be quite easily launched off the second story ;) Like I said, will be fun if I have to drag him to the Koban. Even without a law, I'm sure they'll belittle him for disturbing people so late. (that is, if it's not a scam)

The way to stop this is to not answer the door. Do you have a peephole?
Its not rocket science. He keeps coming back cuz you are the only one answering I suspect.

He didn't come back but it wasn't just my place he was knocking on before. Guy was going door to door in the whole complex.

You could get one of those plastic plaques that stick on somewhere visible that say "No soliciting/door-to-door sales" that they sell at a 100 yen store. That way, when they do bother you, at least you would have a good reason to yell at them.

I had a very pushy Yomiuri Shinbun sales guy that just wouldn't take no for an answer, he even held my door open, in the end I asked his name, and to borrow his cell phone to call his sales bucho and chew him out. Never came back.:jama:
