Spitz Singer Collapses From Quake Trauma

Masamune Kusano, guitarist and vocalist for Spitz is reported to have collapsed from stress brought on my the earthquake. The band's website describes (Japanese) how Kusano experienced the quake and became disturbed by constant aftershocks and endless news reports on the disaster. The band was due to go on the road but has now cancelled events. Kusano is believed to need three weeks to make a full recovery.

But the apology on the band's website makes it pretty clear that the other members feel sufficiently wretched about not being able to fulfill their roles as musicians, even though they weren't directly affected by the disaster.

I'm with Mulb on this one. You never know how people are going to handle stress. For all we know this guy could already have had mental issues and this just put him over the edge. It happened with a friend of mine who I've known since junior high after 9/11. In my friend's defense he was directly affected. However, so were plenty of other people I know and they didn't end up institutionalized and unemployable.

If it comes down to a choice between feeling sorry for the singer or feeling sorry for his band mates (and fans), I know exactly where my sympathies lie.

Having said that, I'm also thinking that it might have been a really bad idea for them to post that apology, worded the way it is. It might have been smarter to simply apologize and say that they would be on a temporary hiatus due to unexpected health problems. As it is they're essentially saying that they're pissed that they can't go out and do their job because their singer is a wuss. Their disappointment is very clear, and I figure they ought to know (that band has been together for quite a while).

Thinking about it a bit more, I come to realize that it's a trifling issue that I really don't give a shit about anyway, and that I'm only venting a bit of my own stress.

The temptation to call others "pussy" or "coward" is very strong because it can help reinforce your own sense of self-worth and sound judgement and those qualities are probably in need of some support after being shaken around for a couple of weeks. That's certainly not the only reason people use the jibes but it's not an insignificant one either.

Being neither in need of help to reinforce my own self-worth and sound judgement nor of support, I guess I fall into the, "That's certainly not the only reason people use the jibes" category.

I'm not gonna judge the boy, but I do think he should man up a bit, unless of course he's lost some people he knew.
