Any companies looking to replace a Flyjin?

Postby sublight » Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:45 pm

American, fluent in Japanese, 10+ years experience in advertising (copywriting, creative direction, production, etc.) and brand consulting here in Tokyo. Amenable to travel, but won't run off in a crisis. Also know others with similar credentials.

Anyone looking to fill recently-vacated positions?
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

Is it wrong of me to hope that there might be some job prospects in the near future because of the exodus? I don't want to be seen to take advantage of a tragedy...but.......

It depends on what you want to do. I heard just yesterday that Interac lost something like 250 out of 500 teachers. They just up and left. Interac's not the only company having troubles right now.

As far as education goes, it's definitely a job seeker's market right now.

I'm not so fond of teaching - patience is most certainly not one of my virtues.
But it is an easy way to get back into the country. I'm pretty keen to move back this year, so i'm keeping an eye on what is out there.

The old boy who picks up the cardboard boxes and aluminum cans for this block is leaving, so you might be able to get his spot. For a short dog of Shochu, you might even be able to talk him out of his pull cart when he leaves.......

I'm with IP. I'm examining a re-entry strategy.

Aren't you an IT guy, AO? Just write cloud, virtualization and application in as many places as possible on your resume and someone will hire you ;)

One of the barriers to recruitment right now is that business is down for most companies so they aren't necessarily in a hurry to replace people who show no willingness to return.

A lot of foreigners work in businesses which depend on other foreigners - hairdressers, fitness instructors, hotelliers, restaurants, bars, headhunters, financial advisors etc - so there may yet be another round of departures if people who want to stay can't find enough customers to make a living. Some larger organizations were already relocating to Singapore and Hong Kong so that may also accelerate.

Even though radiation risks seem paramount in people's minds - and there isn't likely to be a swift resolution in Fukushima - I wonder whether the earthquake risk might not start to loom larger for some. There's a good deal of speculation about how the recent quake may have increased the risk of a Tokyo-centred quake. I've no idea how that risk can be assessed but there may be some individuals and businesses who seem to feel they've pulled the trigger on an empty chamber this time and don't fancy playing the game anymore.

I'm sure companies will eventually start thinking about growing their business in Japan. At the moment, it's unclear whether the country will encourage FDI and open the door to more foreign businesses as part of the rebuilding process. If that happens, there'll be some good opportunities for bright and willing foreigners. If everything stays local, however, then there might even be fewer opportunities than there were a few weeks ago.

I've definitely seen this happening on both a corporate and individual level. With short-term business prospects not looking so good in some industries, people who were planning to leave in a year or two are deciding to do it now. I've also seen a couple of FGs use it as a way to convince a wife who was on the fence about whether to relocate to or not. I think the fact that family and friends back home are willing to bend over backwards to help right now also makes it an easier decision for some. That level of goodwill won't be there in a couple of months.

You might consider turning the famous Aomori Black Snake loose in any one of a number of Tokyo Host Clubs. Probably, even make their menu cover.....
