c. 1995 "Nuclear Ginza: Realities of nuclear plant workers"

Postby TennoChinko » Mon Apr 04, 2011 10:51 pm

While German ARD correspondent Robert Hetkämpfer has received some flak for his reports and allegations that Tepco has relied heavily on workers drawn from the ranks of the homeless and other disenfranchised groups like the burakumin to do the heavy dangerous work in the nuclear plants, there may be some truth to his charges. Below is a 1995 documentary (subtitles in English) with interviews with former and current nuclear plant workers in Japan:

Thank you so much for finding this and posting it. This type of doc is extremely rare in Japanese film and obviously important. A tiny bit over the top so not 100% my favorite type but very very close. And also very hard to find for anything related to Japan. I can find you footage from the 20s of the US taking over the Philippines and the politics there but damned if I can find anything on film about Japan pre or post war that isn't related to tea ceremonies..

Side note loved the bit about 4 mins in from the second clip, you don't need to wash my clothes for me Ma the company does it for me. "Sugoi ne." "What a great company he works for."

edit: English-subbed docs. To those out there more knowledgeable than me. Are these kinds of things available in Japanese only not subtitled? My wife who is also pretty up on her history, says most of what she knows is from manga as shes not a documentary lover like me (but she does know her historical manga). But she also says most Japanese have no idea of any this stuff.

The worst way to study Japanese history is to read books written by the Japanese themselves.

Still Going ON

Postby craiger77 » Mon Apr 11, 2011 12:54 pm

Here is an article from the NY Times about this. Unbelievable that this is still going on.
