I was on a business trip last week and got treated at an Italian restaurant.

There were about 20 of us.

If you're insinuating what I think you are, then that's not a hostess bar AFAIK. Any kind of fooling around goes on during a douhan, if at all.

The popular hostesses will be honshi at multiple tables, so if you meant the girls disappeared from the table from time to time, that's normal.

Yeah, I'm calling total bullshit on that. Anyway, AML sounds like a real classy guy. Go out for a night in what you know is going to be an expensive place and then not offer to pay.

LOL! I edited it, but it still didn't come out right. Last thing I did before I went to sleep.

J-company footed the bill. Very swanky restaurant. Very expensive.

I dont know what kinda bar it was. Maybe they were just accompanying them to the toilet or something. Just looked weird that they would leave together like that.

Anyway, I told them I couldnt afford a club like that and they said the company was paying. So why should I offer?

It's not unusual for the girl who's attending to you to wait outside the toilet with an oshibori.

Why didn't you just say that up front instead of trying to play it off like you were getting away with something?

That's because they can sense your light wallet, filled with receipts and discount coupons. Only those paying their own way get the warm oshibori and the "okaeri nasai".

Yea, my wallet at the time didnt have the girth of the oyajis I was with :(

I guess that's how they compensate for having smaller chinkos :)

It kinda evens out, or even works in their favor...clearly they have much bigger balls to go along with fat wallets.:p

Like I sad all along, I don't really get hostess clubs. And I never really intended to spend money on what are basically whores.
(besides, already said company was paying)

If your into giving your money to someone who just sits and talks to you and pours you drinks, that's up to you. Personally, ill never spend money on something like that. EVER.

So "someone who just sits and talks to you and pours you drinks" is a "whore"?
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

Which is it? Are they whores are do they just get paid to talk and pour drinks? You can't have it both ways.

I personally don't think it's good value for money either but if you socialize with Japanese prefessionals at an equal level (i.e. not as the perpetual gaijin guest who always get treated) at some point you will probably have to pay your share at a place like that. Otherwise you're a scumbag freeloader.

I think it's a good general rule in any country not to go anywhere you aren't willing to pay your way.

Things can get tricky in Japan, or course. Most people first arrive in the country when still young, which often means you haven't got two sticks to rub together. If you turned down every chance to go out on someone else's money then you'd miss out on experiences which make travelling worthwhile. In a work environment, you might not feel in a position to turn down an invitation anyway, and you certainly wouldn't have any choice over likely destinations to control the potential outlay.

It's common for the senior man to pick up a group tab so you might fall into the habit of not expecting to pay when you go to an eye-wateringly expensive place. I don't think that's a good way to go. Every company set up is different, so there aren't any hard rules, but you don't want to get confused about when you are going out on a company treat and when you're accepting a more casual invitation.

Good advice for noobies.

The time I was invited, i was just a young whelp with little experience in Japan. So it was a good learning experience that I wouldn't have had otherwise.
