NHK pisses me off

Postby canman » Mon Jan 16, 2006 1:29 pm

Why can't they have a small part of their website with the listings for the current days televison listings. The home page is all in Japanese. When you click on the English link it takes you to their page for viewers abroad. ITs not a lot to ask, and there are some really good documentaries that they show almost nightly, if I knew when they were on and what they were about. Is it too much to ask. Well maybe it is. Also, if I'm not mistaken the Japan Times usually only lists overseas documentary, oh that is very helpful.

Just a couple of personal observations from my business dealings with NHK....
1. NHK has always hated the Internet.
Back in the 1994 they demoted to Hokkaido (essentially fired) several young Tokyo HQ employees who on their own time made an NHK sub-website with English listings. NHK views their website as nuisance and they're negative attitude shows.
2. Besides the Cherry Blossom News and Kabuki Highlights, NHK despises release of information about Japan to foreign audences.
I have had meetings with NHK International trying to broker the purchase of NHK programming for the US cable market. The director of NHK International couldn't speak engrish or any any foreign language and all the NHK guys at the meeting tried their best to convince me their programming was not suitable for any "Western" audience ....even though I already had arranged a large sale for edited and dubbed version of NHK's kinky children's programing.
NHK has a public duty so how about free streaming from its library?
The Japan Times, Japan - Jan 14, 2006
... Though NHK is a public broadcaster and thus ostensibly beholden to no commercial interests, it is operated on a subscription basis. ... If NHK was truly serious about its "public responsibility," then offering its library for streaming free of charge would go a long way toward gaining viewers' trust...

Is this why Horiemon expresses zero interests in acquiring NHK?

Yeah.. you nailed it.. it's a Total BS TV. They deserve not to gain any audience. Right now, those snobs are in their golden age with unlimited disposable expenses. NHK is blessed with the latest equipments and facility, but there are no skilled operators to use them so most of them get thrown out in their dumpster every year. (Anyone looking for some *old* G5s?) Sooner or later, they will lose all of their cash flow once people stop paying up to those annoying NHK panhandlers that come knocking on your front door like Jehova's witnesses.

My prediction for '06.. they are going to be privatized.

I have heard that from around April there will be no bilingual broadcast of the late (22:00) news. The 19:00 broadcast will be the only one with the sub-channel option.

I read that NHK is going to fire the female anchor of the 10:00pm news, and there is going to be a big shake up. I don't have a chance to watch the 7:00pm news, so I like to watch the 10:00pm one. But it doesn't surprise me.

I think its just like Taro said, they have no real use for English. Hell if they went so far as to fire two understaffers for making a webpage with the days tv listings, hell they'll do anything. By the way does anybody know these people who do the translating, or reading? Some are pretty good, but one girl's voice just drives me up the wall. She has this kind of nasal voice, and her pronunciation sucks. Taro you know everyone whose anyone, who are they?

From what I hear.. NHK does its yearly "cleanup" every once in a while so that they can receive budget for the next fiscal year. Since they are officially a publicly-owned organization, they cannot sell off their properties or put them on Yahoo auction because the goods are technically public property as well. They need to make pre-annual expense reports so that they keep getting their usual cash flow to make themselves happy -- yeah, I know.. the good ol' Japanese bureaucracy -- and they HAVE to dispose their old equipment into their parking lot dumpsters. I am suspecting the next Spring cleaning will be around March for the new fiscal year in April.. so I would start camping out behind the parking lots at around that time.

Who are these people who are reading the English news for NHK? Today at 7:00pm one guy has such a baritone, you have to crank the volume to hear him, then the girl working with him has such a whiny voice, it drives me crazy. Is there any place to complain to NHK about these readers. A few are good, I will admit, but a couple drive me crazy.

Sadly/fortunately, you have to pay for NHK before your complaints are heard. :devil2:

Remember these people aren't just news readers, they've simultaneous interpreters so they probably aren't so easy to replace.

Well, in their defense, isn't this what you all claim when they come to the door to collect? I know that's what I said!
