I still think the reason the safety levels are so conservative, and the reason they have banned shipment from areas that are probably safe, is because they know there will be errors. There is no way the government or companies can keep tabs on exactly what food is safe and what is not, and completely overhaul the distribution chain so precisely the right food is quarantined. That's why they've cast a much wider safety net than necessary, to minimize the risk that anything dangerous happens. As others have pointed out, this food would not have been banned to begin with in most other countries.

When any food gets sold that actually has a health risk from a single serving, please say "I told you so" again, because then I will be worried. Right now, nothing's happened that is remotely close. However, if you want to stop buying produce in stores, be my guest. I am very happy to benefit from the lower prices if demand drops!

Yeah, enjoy your denial and low prices.

Just hope there is not to much liability for peeps that keep saying that official safety margin are way too high and you can safely bypass them because they know better since they base their reactions on what they think what the "real" reason behind governement annoucement. Despite having no real fooking clues... And the fact that "safety margins" keep getting lowered to fit better in the current crisis without scaring too much people.

There's a saying: Better safe than sorry.

I'm sure this subject's been covered, but I can't find anything: if you were the larcenous type, wouldn't you make a beeline to the exclusion zone? All those unoccupied houses and businesses, deserted and just begging for you to unburden them of their valuables. I'm sure the evacuated residents took what cash and jewelry they could, but a lot of goodies must remain. The yaks doubtless have their boys combing through the area as we speak.

-which begs another question: where do you stow your safe if you're living in a gym? In a locker?

Mulboyne wrote:The only guys mentioning it are the people this article and I think it's clear it suits their wider agenda to talk about "Asians" trying to take over Japanese land.

After World War II, people said that Koreans and Chinese falsely claimed land where the real owners were dead or had no proof of title because it had been destroyed. However, it was claimed that these Asians got on better with the Occupation, and so received favourable treatment because they spoke more English than the Japanese. I can't quite see how that supposed advantage is supposed to work in this situation where Japanese authorities will be making all the decisions. It's also difficult to believe that all records will have been lost as they were during the war. After all, visas are handled at a national level by the Ministry of Justice so there's a far longer paper trail then in 1945.

I think Isshiki and the Sakura TV crowd are just bullshitting. I don't doubt there will be a lot of false claims for compensation - we saw that after the 2005 Amagasaki rail crash and the 1995 Kobe quake - but it's highly unlikely that the scamsters will be foreign nationals.

Nah. I suspect the yaks are too busy selling bottled tap water to the rubes. Disasters present so many quasi-legitimate ways of making money, I doubt they would risk the public wrath.

There is still trace of radiation in southern France ( Corsica was most badly hit). More than a few case of thyroid cancer are also blamed on Chernobyl. Seriously, except in France where the coverup by Sarkozy was... immense. Nearly all other countries had a tense spring and summer that year.

You don't think she might be exaggerating a teensy-weensy bit?

Especially where she claims people will surely get cancer in 5-60 years.... Yeah well, it turns out a lot of things might kill me or give me cancer in the coming 60 years but I think the chemicals and the machinery i work with, my love of barbecued red meat or the way I drive will be a bit higher on the list than the fallout from Chernobyl. This is also the reason why it's so difficult to tie leukaemia or other cancers to radioactive contamination. There are so many other things out there that are actually more likely to have caused it.

I wonder why nobody is talking about the hormones that taint the food and the water we consume every single day or the chemicals we use to clean our houses.

If it turns out that hordes of foreigners file fraudulent claims for compensation or land title in the wake of this disaster then I'll be the first to admit I was mistaken.

I'm struck, however, by that amazing coincidence that the people who would like to make political capital out of seeing that occur are the only ones who appear to have stumbled across these unverifiable suspicious individuals. Lucky for them too, that an Asian-looking person should have come up to them and explicitly made a claim. It's not clear why this person should have blurted this out to them rather than going to pursue the claim with the proper authorities.

Anyone who seeks take personal advantage out of a tragedy like this should be condemned. That shouldn't be limited only to those after financial gain.

Japan seals off no-go zone around nuclear plant

Japan sealed off a wide area around a radiation-spewing nuclear power plant on Friday to prevent tens of thousands of residents from sneaking back to the homes they quickly evacuated, some with little more than a credit card and the clothes on their backs.

Fearing they might not see their homes again for months, evacuees raced into the deserted towns Thursday before the ban took effect to grab whatever belongings they could cram into their cars.

"This is our last chance, but we aren't going to stay long. We are just getting what we need and getting out," said Kiyoshi Kitajima, an X-ray technician, who dashed to his hospital in Futaba, a town next door to the plant, to collect equipment before the order took effect at midnight.

Nearly 80,000 people were hurriedly evacuated from a 12-mile (20-kilometer) zone around the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant on March 12, after an earthquake and a tsunami destroyed its power and cooling systems. The order had no teeth, however, and people began increasingly returning to check on the remains of their lives. Some had stayed all along.

With ongoing concerns about radiation exposure &#8212]theft in the mainly deserted zone — government officials imposed the formal closure barring anyone from entering the area.[/b]

Under a special nuclear emergency law, people who enter the zone will now be subject to fines of up to 100,000 yen ($1,200) or possible detention for up to 30 days. Until now, defiance of the evacuation order was not punishable and the police manning the roadblocks had no authority to stop people from entering. ........

You think fear of bad PR will trump their plundering instincts? I don't think it'll stop them any more than a couple of barriers on the main roads. There must be innumerable little farm roads. Drive on in, or park near the perimeter and tell the kobun, chimpira, and other knaves packed in the back of the van to have at it. They can keep what they find, but they have to live off the fat of the land and cough up a little something for the boss.

Is it just me, or does anybody else feel uncomfortable watching the president of Tepco being berated by people for the nuclear disaster. I know the company is wrong, but I cannot imagine any other country in the world where a company president would go and do dogeza!
