Yeah, it's "for real" and I drank all his wine during my visits.

How'd you get in to get at his wine? He made me sit out in the parking lot and threatened to call the police if I got out of the car. Well, I did get on quite well with the hillbillies next door....

I'm guessing that's all there is to it. He has to lay out a futon in the genkan to get some shuteye. The kitchen is a bucket under the stairs. :-P

It manages to be both small and grotesquely overbuilt for the lot:

But at least it sits on non-liquefuquifying land. The neighboring rattrap hillbilly hovels that Taro mentioned will ensure that it burns down when the Big One hits. :(

That was a tool shed in the yard of our Karuizawa place, but it ended being a place for friends' kids to camp out.

Not cool, SJ, and not worthy of you. Coligny was obviously joking...and so were you, I guess, but it read more like a straight-up ad hominem shit-sling followed by a wink.

Sorry if your sense of humor ain't on today.

I always give Colingy shit because:

1. He's French
2. He likes cats
3. He's a self confessed unemployable bum who married a doctor so he doesn't have to work for a living
4. I'm jealous about point # 3.

Working in Japan, not working in Japan: both are recipes for being bored out of your tree, because either way you're going to be around Japanese people to some degree, about whom predictable would be perhaps the quintessential descriptor (everyone's dear spouses and sweeties excepted!). The key is not so much work/life balance as Japan/not-Japan balance. I suspect the peripatetic Mulboyne knows this.

Since I seem to be posting house pix here  , this is kinda funny:

Image

I was so maniacal about squeezing the last square centimeter of value out of the Karuizawa place that I installed a bar sink in part of the pantry (there was still lots of cupboard space in which stuff could decay over the weeks we weren't there).
