Neglected for 35 years... Yesterday we got a bit of a rainseason preview... 3 meter visibility on the road, firemen with unimogs everywhere, truck falling of bridges, the full rehearsall... And the electricity of the clinic kept tripping the outside fuse (the one at the electric meter, usually clue that there is a huge ground fault/leak somewhere...). At the same time mominlaw rings me (got a little bell for that) with a slightly bored face tells me I should have a look at the 4th floor (laundry room) because there is a switch that look strange.

And effectively... the switch controlling light for the washing machine(s) room and the roof terrace, was just... leaking... like... water leaking... I remove the faceplate... and trigger a flood... seems some crack allowed the rainwater to sip through one of the outside light fixture and found her way up to the switch... The whole building is some sort of mystery puzzle box like that... For the past 5 years I have a roof leak in my workshop... trouble is, it's at the 2nd floor, and the 3rd floor there is a bedroom totally dry... So somewhere the rain manage to enter the building, avoid the 3rd floor and leak on the 2nd...

I was so maniacal about squeezing the last square centimeter of value out of the Karuizawa place that I installed a bar sink in part of the pantry (there was still lots of cupboard space in which stuff could decay over the weeks we weren't there).

YOU GOT COPPER FACEPLATE FOR YOUR ELECTRIC PLUGS ?

Let me guess, the crapper is at least gold plated ?

The divorce rate for female J-docs married to male J-docs is extremely high: at least 50 percent, from what I've heard. Male J-docs seem to prefer nurses who don't mind giving up their careers to be housewives.

You can get those faceplates from Tokyu Hands for about 1200 yen each - expensive, but they add a greater amount in visual appeal, IMO.

As for your wife's clinic building, I say raze it and begin anew with a Western-style 2 x 6 structure with adequate insulation and something approximating a vapor barrier. When you've got leaks like you describe, it's hard to imagine there isn't a concomitant mold problem.

Actually... no, that's part of the insanity of this building... It never take long (1-2 hours) for the humidity level to go back between 15 and 30% max after the rain... At first had to put humidifier in the server room... then gave up and just drop few litter of water on the floor every other days...

By night when the cats come too close to each other you can see the sparkles from the static discharges...

Heh, if you had leaking electrical outlets, your house would normally be well on the way to becoming a giant Petrie dish. Yet it dries out so well you have to humidify it by pouring water on the floor! You must have Patrons in High Places...

It's not humidity pouring through, it's unfortunately channelled rainwater... totally different matter...

The flat in Nagoya was 90% humidity all year long, black mold, cat sick, and the outlet were dripping with humidity in winter this time (the buzz coming from the electric fusebox was quite impressive too)...

Intermittent rainwater exposure can create problems of its own, even in a low-humidity environment. Keywords: dry rot. It's more common than you think. In fact, you may be suffering from it and not even know it. See your doctor today.

Possible token (very token) compensation for folks who've lost tens of millions of yen in property values:
The government plans to provide financial assistance for the reconstruction of houses damaged by soil liquefaction in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake.

The financial aid will be distributed across an extensive area, including Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures and Tokyo, a government official said Tuesday.

It will be the first time the Law on Support for Reconstructing Livelihoods of Disaster Victims will have been applied because of damage caused by liquefaction.

The government will make a formal decision on the matter by the end of this month.
