The Cro-Magnons -Anybody seen them live?

Postby Rube » Sat Apr 30, 2011 1:42 pm

I'Ve been wanting to see them for a while but it seems like they are only scheduled for the bigger shows this summer so I'm going to wait till they do they own shows at smaller venues. Anybody catch them?

Wonder if that had anything to do with their naming. These are the same guys (vocal and guitar) who made The Blue Hearts and The High-lows. One of my favorite bands here not that I like many to begin with but they have some really good tunes.

My dad really got into Japanese punk in the late 80s. I remember he used to listen to some pretty good shit. I wonder if he remembers any of the bands' names.

There was one excellent punk band from Kyoto called Taiho. Two dudes who would alternate the singing duties a gazillion times each song, and this rather cute female drummer with sleeve tats. Saw them a bunch of times when I got here (circa 1999). Alas, alack. etc., they broke up many years ago.

I'm pretty sure pops was introduced to it by a half he was dating after my parents' divorced. Doubt he kept up with it over the years but I'll have to ask next time we speak.

Whenever I mention that my dad liked Japaense punk people seem all shocked. He's only 59 (I'm mid 30s) so punk was lot more his era than mine. I guess people are either ignorant of music history or just assume he's a lot older.

Yeah, punk is old. 75% of the Ramones are dead, same for Poly Styrene last week, Lux Interior, etc. Still, there are the Lemmys out there, still snorting biker crank for breakfast.

Not to change the subject but speaking of crank, for any of you that aren't up on what's going on with US TV, I highly recommend Breaking Bad. You can rent ;) the first couple of seasons at Tsutaya.

I've been waiting for that show, from what I hear it's pretty intense. We watched the first few seasons of weeds but was dissappointed that it had very little to actually do with weed.

Breaking Bad and Mad Men are easily two of the best shows on tv right now. Seen every episode of both. The Walking Dead is also on AMC and also awesome if you're into zombie stuff. It's so funny cause when we left AMC was all about old movies and now they are producing some of the highest quality dramas on US tv.

For those of us in Japan, I just noticed that you can watch a free streaming version of Breaking Bad's first episode on Sony Pictures' Japan wesbsite. And it's even the subtitled version and not a dub!

http://www.sonypictures.jp/tv/shows/breakingbad/

For those of you who can't read Japanese just click on the bar in the middle of the page that says "Episode 1". Enjoy!

For real? I'll have to check tsutaya next time. They are so spotty about what they carry. About 9 years ago my local tsutaya had what one can only describe as a drug section. Fear and loathing and blow and a bunch of other flicks but since Noripi did her jelly fish dance they have cleaned up a bunch. That time was fucked up in any sense of the imagination, donkey hotei selling crack pipes.

Wife doesn't speak English so any shit that she might like I have to wait till it gets subtitled or act surprised. Wait that's not true, the other day she dropped something and I heared her say "Fuck me!" I knew I could be a teacher.

lol, I just tried to google a video of the popopo jelly fish dance and every one was taken down for copyright infringement.

For anybody who doesn't know, Noripi is a famous idol who was fucked out of her mind on meth during an interview and she kept laughing at her dress saying that she felt like a jelly fish popopopopo, what made it even funnier was that she acutally did look like a jelly fish.

Breaking Bad is not really a "drug" show in the way something like fear and loathing in las vegas is. Meth is at it's center but it's about way more than that, mostly the main character's extremely fucked up life. And it absolutely does not in anyway glorify meth use, it makes it look to be one of the most horrifying things anyone could do. Saw Bryan Cranston interviewed once and talked about what he had learned about the drug, said the worst part was after a little while you didn't get high off it anymore, so now you're addicted and not even getting off... Anyway great great show.

Yup that's about what I heard. More along the line of that movie "Spun", nothing appealing about that. Too bad weeds didn't take the other approach.

I've never heard of spun, what do you mean "nothing appealing about that"? Are you saying well written dramas about drugs are not appealing if they are about the bad side of drugs and not just partying Hunter S. Thompson style? I'm a long time pot smoker and other, and now just a raging drunk but man you lost the last credit in my eyes if that's what you are saying. Even my coke addict buddy from high school likes breaking bad and that cats waaaay out there on the partying.

Anyway back on the off-topic, Weeds got good again last season imo. Lots of friends gave up on it though so I can't back that up with anyone else's opinion. It's been all over the place, like literally, from she's a suburban housewife to the wife of a mexican drug cartel leader, and on and on. But I liked last season, they took it on the road (running away from said mexican cartel) and it was just fun in general. But that aside, the MUCH better show to watch on Showtime is Californication, this one is up there with Breaking Bad for me. Doubt it's at Tsutaya though if that's where you are getting your shows from.

"Californication" is also at Tsutaya. All the locations I've been to in central Tokyo have tons of American dramas. Maybe more inaka shops don't. I don't know.

Anyway, if you're having trouble finding these shows at your local video store, try Tsutaya Discas. It's like Netflix in the US. They deliver DVDs to you by mail in a returnable plastic envelope that includes postage for a low monthly fee. It ends up being a lot cheaper than renting them at the store.

Surprised that is at Tsutaya, I haven't been to one in ages but last time the television pickings were bad bad (in Kobe not inaka). Also I've heard of the Tsutaya Discas things and it sounds promising. Everybody back home uses Netflix, it would be nice if the TV variety here could be anywhere near what it is in other countries.

Breaking Bad's Japan Connection

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Sat Apr 30, 2011 11:40 pm

Great timing! I just watched the 6th episode of season 2 of "Breaking Bad" and I thought the tweaker in it looked very familiar. Then I realized it was none other than everyone's favorite Japan-raised hakujin: Ken Tanaka.

I googled this LA Times article just to confirm.

A figure known from videos on the Internet also has a show at Billy Shire Fine Arts gallery. Now, about that alter ego ....

April 10, 2009|Miles Beller

The show spins off of Tanaka's quirky and kicky videos. Though they are generally gentle in tone and temperament, an aggressive silliness often pokes through. Currently, there are more than 80 Tanaka-themed YouTube vids online bearing such titles as "Ken Tanaka Eats Kobe Beef," "Ken Tanaka Goes to Comic-Con and Meets a Suicide Girl" and "Ken Tanaka Goes Back to School?" The passion and the following these byte-size movies are provoking has caught its subject off-guard.

Perceptions differ

Like the videos, Tanaka's live show undoubtedly will raise questions of authenticity and truth. For while some see Tanaka as an overblown, cartoony caricature, others receive him as a provocative inquiry into the Japanese soul as refracted by American values. Whereas many find Tanaka endearingly coy, others dismiss him as merely manufactured joy, the creation/alter ego of Ury, a Sonoma native who lived in Japan for several years, appearing on TV there as a wacky foreigner who jabbered in the native tongue.

Indeed, Ury is an agile performer who does innocence better than Bambi. When Ury relocated to Los Angeles in 2001, he studied improv with the Groundlings comedy troupe and soon afterward started an acting career. He has appeared on TV series (NBC's "Heroes" and "Life") and on Sunday will be spotlighted in an episode of AMC's "Breaking Bad." In addition to acting, Ury has adapted into English more than 100 Japanese manga graphic novels.

As to Ury's relationship to Ken Tanaka, Ury willingly cites Tanaka as a long-lost twin but maintains this is where the DNA starts and stops.

Spun is a movie by a swedish director with Mickey Rourke as a cook and group of junkies who are all connected through the pusher. I meant there is nothing appealing about that life style but I loved the movie.

All right you've got the benefit of the doubt again from my also newbie poster to here self at least. Now chill the hell out and post a "sorry I went off and I'll stfu now" in your original thread. You really come off as some kind of straight up rube in that thread which this board is having a bunch of lately. The guys you are attempting to flame have been here since saying flame on the internet was cool. Nuff said.

Ken Tanaka is.. (jesus.. I have no idea.) Watch Exit Through the Gift Shop to see what he does done right. He's a youtube joke to put it short.

Looks like Ken has been pretty active on US TV. There's a video on IMDB showing clips of work he's done. After watching it I realized this isn't the first time I've seen him on TV before. I just never recognized him.
