Looks like Ando has nailed the championships.
She didn't put in a perfect performance, but I guess it was good enough. Just squeaked past Kim, who came in second. Kostner was third.
Asada placed 6th, and Murakami 8th.

Figure skating-Japan's Ando wins emotional gold
Yahoo! News | 2011-04-30

Ando showed her nerves of steel to clinch her second world title with a combined total of 195.79 points. Kim finished with 194.50.
"Maybe I was able to bring back a little smile to the people of Japan," Ando, who had won her last world title on home ice in Tokyo in 2007, told reporters...more...

Actually, according to AFP, Kim is donating her $27,000 winnings to the UNICEF's relief efforts in Tohoku.

celebrities donating doesn't impress me when it's detuctable and a investment in their future here in Japan. They make so much more money than what they win at these events.

Ice skaters don't make all that much but Kim has made millions from endorsements so 27K is less significant to her than five bucks is to most people. But whatever. It's not her duty to give anything to anyone and 27K is still 27K.

$27K from her is a hell of a lot more significant than $5 from anyone else for the people on the receiving end.

Ah, UNICEF. Anyone know what its administrative take is? I figure maybe $270 of her donation will trickle down to Tohoku.

-catone
-on a more serious note, I still pick up a bit of a sapphic vibe from her. WRT Miki, I'd donate to her orthodontic relief fund, but there'd be a quid pro quo involved that she might find distasteful.

That was my point with the last sentence. I always love it when people critisize the rich for giving money because it's not that much of their total wealth. I guess Son's 100 oku yen donation was meaningless too since he's worth billions of dollars.

I love when people like you miss the point that I wasn't critizing her I was saying that I'm not impressed by it. I'm more impressed by the guy who can't afford to make rent but still donates 500 yen. You're a dishonest person.

Plus the symbolic value of a high profile Korean making a donation to Japan is important. I'm impressed with Kim.

What I'm wondering is if/when Miki Ando (how much was the 1st prize anyway?) will decide to donate her winnings...
Apparently Kim has donated close to $2 million USD in the last 4 years.

I don't think it's winnings. Those skaters don't make much money from the skating itself. Most of Kim's money comes from endorsements and public appearances, etc. She's on billboards and TV commercials all over Korea. The Japanese skaters aren't nearly as active commercially.

Oh, I don't know...I see Mao Asada flogging something on the telly nearly every one of those infrequent times I turn it on and she's definitely in ads all over the train carriages, staring down at commuters (although, with her ronpari, it's a little difficult to work out exactly who she is staring down at, but let's not get nasty....).
When I knew a little bit about this shite, Mao had just been taken over by a management company that I won't name (but it's made up of three letters). She was signing up then on very generous terms, and I haven't seen her value decline over the ensuing years, so she can certainly afford to give to the afflicted.
Mum (whose soft spot for me gave me a hard spot and left me feeling like a dog that's just had its belly rubbed) and dad (who I never got to meet) are mizushobai people and thus have an innate lust for money that often produces the type of shrewdness that will ensure Mao and Mai are doing very well indeed, I'm sure.
From what I knew of the family, they were excellent people, all, but they are not the types to donate to charity. And they should not be chided for it. See Catone's post above for just one very good reason to flip the bird at charities.

Yeah, Asada does ads. I can remember candy, cameras, ... and something else that I can't remember. She seems to be the most active of the J-skaters in the extracurricular fortune building game, but still not at the Yuna Kim level, I think. Kim is a serious money-making machine. They even had her singing on TV at one point. I thought that was pushing the "tarento" angle a bit much, but hey, whatever works.

Sorry hammer, re-read your post and realized what you were saying and that my lengthy reply didn't really directly correspond with what you had written.
You're right...none of the skaters make any money from skating per se; they're not allowed to as it is still a strictly amateur sport. They can make money from endorsements, appearances and, the bigger winner, exhibitions. Appearance fees for exhibitions are placed in trusts that can be accessed upon losing amateur status.
Ever been to some of these skating shows? (Or the ballet, for that matter?) They cost an arm and leg to get in and are usually jam-packed with 30- to 40-something shielas who probably all live with mum and dad and are overloaded with money and nothing else to spend it on. It's a market I'd love to tap into...in more ways than one. And it's not just Japan that is that way...it's the same wherever ice skating is reasonably popular.
So, it doesn't surprise me Kimchee Yu Na is making a bundle. I would be too if I could find a way to insert my goodwill into skating fans' hearts and minds (but I look bloody awful in sequinned bodty suits, so I don't fancy my chances....)

Last year when I went to Korea it is was amazing just how many billboards and subway ads she was on. It seemed like 90% or more. Her star may be fading though with her recent performance.
