2011/05/03 08:37
SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)
--Hackers who targeted Sony Corp. may have stolen personal data for customers from a second online service, bringing the potential number of compromised accounts to over 100 million.
Sony Online Entertainment, a San Diego-based subsidiary that makes multiplayer games, said it has suspended access to its services overnight between Sunday and Monday after discovering personal information from 24.6 million accounts had been stolen. The information included names, addresses, birthdates and other personal details.
The company also said a database from 2007 containing credit card numbers and expiration dates on non-U.S. customers may also have been compromised in the attack. Hackers may also have gained access to 10,700 direct debit records of customers in Austria, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands, the company said...more...

This is turning into one of those typical Japanese scandals that dribble out over weeks like a loose shit.

Day 1: Ok, that bit is true, but that's all. You can stop investigating now.
Day 2: Ok, that other part's also true, but that's all. You can stop investigating now.
Day 3: Ok, that other thing's true too, but that's all. You can stop investigating now.

And on and on and on. Like a 4-year-old who can't admit he was caught red-handed.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

Sony Customers Furious Over PlayStation Hacking (Text and audio)

Sony is still trying to determine how hackers broke into its networks two weeks ago. They had access, apparently, to personal information from about 100 million customer accounts, people who play games using the company's Playstation and its online gaming system. Many of those gamers are angry with the way Sony is handling the breech. NPR's Wendy Kaufman reports.

And now they are blaming 'Anonymous' for this sh1t:

"What is becoming more and more evident is that Sony has been the victim of a very carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack designed to steal personal and credit card information for illegal purposes"

carefully planned,
very professional,
highly sophisticated

Not exactly the words anybody would use to describe Anonymous...

Exclusive: Third attack against Sony planned
CNET News | May 5, 2011 4:36 PM PDT --A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach.
An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers...more...

Kinda weird they are pulling this with the PS when their new line of Xperia phones can be unlocked by Sony for the same kind of usage as they are putting a stop to with the PS.

Sony Pictures hacked by Lulz Security, 1,000,000 passwords claimed stolen

June 2nd 2011

Breaking News

Oh, Sony -- not again. We've just received numerous tips that Lulz Security has broken into SonyPictures.com, where it claims to have stolen the personal information of over 1,000,000 users -- all stored (disgracefully) in plain text format. Lulz claims the heist was performed with a simple SQL injection -- just like we saw the last time around. A portion of the group's exploit is posted online in a RAR file, which contains over 50,000 email / password combos of unfortunate users. We've downloaded this file (at our own risk, mind you) and can verify these sensitive bits are now in the wild, though it remains unclear if what's published matches reality. In addition to user information, the group has blurted out over 20,000 Sony music coupons, and the admin database (including email addresses and passwords) for BMG Belgium employees. Fresh off the heels of the PlayStation Network restoration, we're guessing the fine folks in Sony's IT department are now surviving solely on adrenaline shots.

Wow, that's crazy that they didn't immediately beef-up security for the databases of all their companies. WTF is going on over there?

Nope... tards would have unplugged the cord to the server immediately and started to suck the wallplug to get the information back from the hackers...

So in fact... it would have been a better option...

The guys from Sony are way way waaaaayyyy further down below for the quality of their response to the problem...

Rumor: Sony Hacker Arrested After Leak of Developer Source Code
Member of LulzSec group taken into custody earlier today, according to IRC chat log.

June 6, 2011
by Michael Thomsen

Earlier today one of the Sony hackers from the group LulzSec (Lulz Security) is said to have been arrested, according to a report from news site The Epoch Times. LulzSec is thought to be the group responsible for hacking the PlayStation Network in April.

According to the report, which is based on a chat log taken from an IRC server that was obtained by a security tools group, LulzSec cracked Sony's Developer Network and uploaded copies of the code onto a number of file sharing websites. The full implications of having access to this code are unclear but at the very least it would mean potential hackers could interface with the PSN using the privileges given developers.

The report claims the hacker has been taken into custody by the FBI. Neither Sony nor any law enforcement agency has made any statements regarding the matter.

Just finished watching Sony's E3 press conference from yesterday, and I'm unimpressed with Sony US's apology for the whole PSN debacle. I wasn't expecting much, but 'sorry for the anxiety we've caused' is a pretty weak sauce. It would have been nice if they said something like 'we've learned a lot from this and we promise to do better in the future' but apparently that's too much to ask for one of the largest data breaches in US history and it is much easier to say crap like 'we love our customers and the network activity level is up to 90% of what it was before the breach' and then start talking about a bunch of 3D shit no one asked for. But apparently, Jack Tretton, Sony's head US SCEA guy, felt that it was serious enough occasion to justify wearing a tie (albeit a blue one with a salmon colored shirt), to which his tie-less boss, Kazuo Hirai, made fun of later on.
