Another leaky nuke plant

Japan may close nuclear plant, tiny radiation leak at another

Image

Japan on Monday announced a tiny radiation leak at a nuclear reactor on its west coast, while another power company is expected to close a nuclear plant in central Japan due to its vulnerability to a major quake.

Electricity wholesaler Japan Atomic Power said it had stopped the leak after a minute amount of radiation was found in gas that escaped from the Tsuruga nuclear plant on Sunday. It said there had been no impact on the environment.

Japan Atomic said it was investigating the cause of the leak, which is bound to increase public unease over the troubled nuclear industry in the wake of the massive earthquake and tsunami that crippled the Fukushima nuclear facility in March.

Figured I'd start a new thread since this isn't directly related to the earthquake and tsunami. The Hamaoka plant closure was already mentioned by Ganma in the other thread.

This case doesn't sound like it was anything to worry about but given the current climate, I'm sure it'll have a few people shitting their pants.

Rumor mill is already running wild with this. According to a few fools (one drunk friend...drunk at 8pm on a Monday...yikes): There will be a huge earthquake in Shizuoka on May 20th, hence they are shutting down the plants now. I'd like to add my 10 cents on to this BS....the US will be testing HAARP again on May 20th.

That's right. The new version of the HAARP WMD will utilize the ionosphere to open crevices throughout the earth, which all non-believers and selected believers will be swallowed into pits containing specially designed blades from Swedish meat grinders. This will result in marketable finger sized sausages and related stuffed cabbage styled products at reduced prices for sale in a chain of supermarkets owned by Al Gore.

Japan Backs Off Of Nuclear Power After Public Outcry

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Thu May 12, 2011 1:52 pm

Japan is reassessing how it produces electricity after March's earthquake and tsunami sparked a crisis at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan this week persuaded the operators of another nuclear plant west of Tokyo to temporarily close it to make safety improvements. And he is canceling a plan to build more nuclear facilities.

Kan's decisions to back away from nuclear power came after an unusual number of public demonstrations. The protests have been more frequent because many Japanese have grown impatient with the government, says Koichi Nakano, who teaches political science at Sophia University in Tokyo.

"Skeptics argue that, in fact, Japan has enough energy already as of now without nuclear power plants, using fossil fuels and hydro-electronic power generation, and so I think people are now becoming gradually exposed to those new facts," Nakano says.
