Didn't the Koreans beat them to it?

well, not nuclear, just the waste part anyways...

Pollution and environmental destruction

There is a serious concern for pollution in the seas surrounding Liancourt Rocks. The sewage water treatment system established on the islets has malfunctioned and sewage water produced by inhabitants of Liancourt Rocks such as South Korean Coast Guard and lighthouse staff is being dumped directly into the ocean. Significant water pollution has been observed] Efforts have since been made by both public[31] and private[32] organizations to help curb the level of pollution surrounding the Rocks.

If it was a (good) movie, they would reap a new one to Tepco wide enough for the Russian Victory Day parade to go through all at once...

Call me cynical... but I don't really see this happening, and the China Syndrome was not really a good movie anyway... always preferred holocaust 2000

Problem is no matter what happens, we end paying for both sides of this fiasco.

Can anyone explain to me, why would TEPCO have shut down the cooling system manually? A few people have said it was to save the reactors, but I can't understand that. Was it a mistake, or what? Please enlighten me!

I think they suspected a leak because of low pressure reading and prefered keeping hot water than losing it all... (don't quote me on that)

How have they not nationalized that bitch yet? A monopoly that is bleeding more money than they have due to incompetency, hell, it already sounds like most government run departments...

= RUMOR =

Just heard a rumor that Shimizu, the dark overlord of TEPCO, is likely to walk with a JPY 600 million retirement payout, and then be rehired as an advisor at around 70 mil/year.

I have not yet seen a reliable source for this.

Anyone know anything?

Yeah, I'd heard that as well. Ironic that Ghosn is under fire for his 13 million-dollar bonus, but I'm not of any pressure on that sniveling, conniving coward Shimizu by TEPCO shareholders, including Dai Ichi Seimei, the largest or one of the largest.

And along with chokenen, I'd like to know why all of TEPCO's bondholders and shareholders haven't all been escorted to the barber's chair and given buzzcuts. Why should the J-taxpayer go first? Perhaps Dai Ichi Seimei (vide supra) has an opinion.

With catone...shareholders/bondholders should be footing the bill. They were very happy to take TEPCOs very generous dividends for decades. Why should taxpayers rescue these people?

As owners of the company, they should be forced to liquidate their personal assets to pay the innocent people affected by their company. Limited Liability is a scam.

Sorry, I admit it, I'm pinko....I guess that in addition to becoming a $6 Million Dollar Man (or thereabouts), Mr. Shimizu is probably also going to walk into a cushy advisorial position at some quasi-government amakudari organization where his expertise on nuclear safety will be put to good use.

Maybe I'm just naive, but I always wonder why shite like this doesn't turn more people pinko...I guess they're like me: hanging out to get their own turn at making a shiteload without doing anything spectacularly difficult....

I thought this issue would cross the line with the government but TIJ afterall...maybe I'm going about this wrong. Maybe it really is time to buy shares of TEPCO.

They are, however, finding out that there is a price to pay on the back end when you capitalize the enormous loss suffered from periodic failures - in addition to the incalculable human suffering and loss of life.
Either way, up front or back end, nuclear power is unaffordable in my opinion.

In that context, I see what you mean.

With rising power prices, I must say that when I eventually get wifed up and build a house, solar panels are going in one way or another...fuck TEPCO pricing and policies. Hell, might just go all out and dig a well. Self reliance FTMFW

You give too much credit to people's attention spans. Average idiot is more interested in some congressman's wiener shot than in a major nuclear accident...

The wife was mentioning this to me this afternoon. She was saying the muppet-looking guy had gone to Ginza with a present for his girlfriend on the night that the Fukushima disaster was declared Level 7.

I am speechless.

He's a NISA (Nuclear and Industrial Safety Association - a section of METI) guy. Kind of like the US NRC, but not really. They don't really have autonomy from the industry or the government. Think of them as the place where the amakudari fall from.

Never trust a guy who wears a wig as bad as his. His whole life is spent hiding something and living a lie. And he's a Tokyo University and Harvard (LL.M.) lawyer...

People thought he was a nuclear engineer. He's just an old MITI policy wonk and former head of the New York JETRO office.

(Added: his last gig was Director General for International Trade Policy and that was only about a year ago.)
