Well, it's already past 6:00 PM in parts of the world, and thus far there are no reports of widespread destruction, so I'm gonna take a wild guess that the world isn't going to end just yet.

I'd get dressed for that meeting if I were you.

Can't wait to hear whatever excuse the end-of-worlders are going to come up with this time.

5 minutes to Rapture. Everyone, assume your Rapture positions!

I was going to quit smoking if the Rapture didn't happen, but fuck it, there's still 2012.

Oh crap ... need an excuse ... ahhh, how about:

* We were using the wrong calendar to make our calculations?
* Someone did something very nice today so God gave us a reprieve?

I dunno, the heck with it, how about "we're fucked in the head and come up with crazy ideas all the time."

The Rapture didn't happen because Randy Savage is up there right now, delivering elbow drops in defense of us all.

Those guys were definitely nuts but I will say that if you're the follower of any kind of religion, your beliefs are just as crazy. There are millions of evangelical Christians who believe exactly what this group was preaching. The only difference is they aren't certain when it will happen.

And then there are ideas like creationism. There you have people -- lots of people -- believing that the world sprung into existence about 6,000 years ago, that humans (the homo sapiens variety) coexisted with dinosaurs, and a whole bunch of other seriously loopy ideas, all in spite of incontrovertible physical evidence to the contrary.

Much of the silliness seems to spring from literal interpretations of ancient religious texts that were originally written as fables. That goes for most religions. Why people persist in interpreting these parables as "gospel truth" is beyond me.

To my way of thinking, having faith in anything is not the problem.
It's attaching religion to faith that fucks it all up.

For sure, you have to have faith in something. I'd go so far as to say that's a basic necessity for life. At the very least you have to have faith in yourself.

Although I personally don't subscribe to any particular religion, I wouldn't call myself an "atheist" simply because the concept of God can be so broad and flexible. You can quite reasonably assume "God" to be everything that makes the world work as it does, for example, without presuming the existence of some kind of supernatural being and interpreting everything in some religious text (written by a human or a group of humans, of course) to the letter. The problem with religions for me is that they invariably impose some form of human ego on the concept of God, and that screws the whole thing up right from the git-go. I guess that makes me sort of agnostic.

Anyway, yeah, faith is good, as long as it doesn't become a "my faith is better than your faith" type thing.

Actually, what I'd really like to know about the Rapture is what the man from Mars is eating now...

Now, getting really dumber, wasn't it the other way around first? (Just had a scary thought of meeting lips with one set belonging to Mick Jagger....)

Yeah, there was something about Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithful, and a Mars Bar, but I don't think it was quite as banal as her simply feeding it to him. I don't think the true facts have ever been fully revealed, but as Hairdo implies it might have been the other way around ... if "feeding" is the right word.

Although ... maybe it was the way she fed it to him ... never mind, I'm rapidly losing my appetite for facts, and anything else.

Whatever the truth behind that story is, it can be simply summed up by "A man's gotta eat."
