Moar question: Murphy's Bed

Postby Coligny » Sun May 23, 2010 1:05 am

I have never seen Murphy's bed available anywhere in japan. I was just searching for the mounting hardware. I will certainly go the way of the bubba school of redneck engineering with random bits from the local hardware store but just before starting the slaughtering (hemmm... home improvement as they say). I was wondering if you saw something on the topic, locally.

I think the sequence around the 40 second mark in this trailer might have contributed to their unpopularity in Asia:

Sean connery have really been good at only playing himself in random movies... I wonder what the hunt for red october would have looked like without a scottish russian sub driver...

My homemade boxspring is now standing on jackstand... stolen for the car toolbox... I think i have now used my lowjack more often for home improvement than for car lifting...

I think this kind of bed is quite useful too.

1 year later and with a bed still on jackstands (bought some ramps for lifting the car instead) Found some links for japanese Murphy's bed:

Bit pricey unfortunately...

Wow, I've been wanting one of these for awhile....pricing on those Japanese sites looks like more motivation to find a better freight service to import one from the U.S.

Especially since most of them don't even seem to have real mattresses. Who the fuck wants to pay two-thousand bucks for a shitty futon pad in a cabinent?

Looks like you can actually buy just the basic mechanism (save on shipping) and then build your own custom setup :D nice if you're even slightly mechanically inclined.

From the japanese sites ?

Because I found a lot of these on ebay or amurikin webs, but 300 USD for 2 locks, 2 rotating plates and useless dampers was quite expensive in my book... Especially since only the rotating mechanism is really 'special' and needed everything else can be sourced anywhere

On the US sites. Few different brands offer it. I am definitely considering it as soon as I move somewhere more permanent.

On another note, I dragged back a $40 inflatable queen sized Coleman bed with me on this last trip. It's triple high and suuuuuuper comfortable. For $15 more, a rechargeable air pump that inflates the thing made it a breeze (literally) to setup. I slapped a memory foam topper on it and have to say it's the most comfortable thing I have ever slept on in Japan. (and hilarious when the lemurs look up and ask how I ever managed to get a queen size bed up in the loft)
