Based on the quote, Deadbeato doesn't seem to be going quite so far as to call for a boycott, but, nonetheless, I can't disagree with him about the GOJ's constant lack of public service.

I think a prime example of the GOJ's lack of action toward the civic good was giving this twit citizenship and, consequently, a podium from which to attack innocuous bathhouses and small nightclubs across the cuntry.

He was discussing it in the context of the government promoting tourism to Japan in the aftermath of quake.

He either believes Japan is not a safe place to visit (and, presumably, to live) or else believes the government of Japan should be punished for its handling of the situation at Fukushima by the refusal of anyone to do what the government hopes they will do. In this case, the international community to shun any appeals to visit Japan. If the latter, then it certainly sounds like a boycott he wants.

I stand corrected, but I did have the disclaimer based on the quote.

I don't think he has to worry. Japan is not going to become a popular tourist destination for quite some time. Radiation tans just aren't a top priority ... not even for the Chinese!

Does anyone in Gen X/Y ever think bout getting laid?

I don't follow the whole Debito thing much but this was well said. I especially like #2. A kinda hobby of mine is following various activists and directly but mostly indirectly participating. I love to learn everything I can about people fighting for their rights, from the history of the Black Panthers to Chuck D to the current Arab Spring. Debito is just horrible as an activist. The worst kind who tries to stir up shit at every turn but accomplishes absolutely nothing. The guy is good at publicity but that has backfired constantly and he doesn't realize it or ignores it. It's all detrimental in the end. He needs to learn some diplomacy skills first and foremost before he shoots his mouth off ever again or he is hurting us much more than he is helping us.

I've bumped into a few people who have enjoyed a drink with him. I think he might have gone off at the deep end a bit with his recent posts but I hope he's keeping it together elsewhere. He has attracted a lot more attacks over the last couple of years and I think they have taken him by surprise.

He may now regret talking so openly about his personal life on his site because criticisms of his his views, motives etc almost inevitably become comments on his character.

I never really took to Debito in the Dead Fukuzawa Society debates but he did bring up issues which mattered to the foreign (mainly western) community at a time when more people were thinking about settling down in Japan and the economic headwinds had got a lot stronger.

He became a lot less interesting to me when he seemed to start looking for fights and carrying grudges and it looks like quite a few people who thought well of his efforts at first now just find him exasperating.

It seems two things have happened in recent years. Firstly, he stopped digging out issues himself and began to rely more heavily on contributors bringing him stories. A lot of these turned out to be highly unreliable. In his own mind, he may have thought he was bringing these up for "the community" to discuss but, instead, it looked like he was endorsing these complaints which has compromised his credibility.

With more people openly crying foul, he began to react by editing their criticisms on his site. This just turned up the heat and now there's a dedicated site which exists so people can lay into him in an unmoderated forum. Now we have a feedback loop where Debito, thinking people are out to get him, lashes out at these criticisms which only brings more woe as it all turns into a shitstorm.

I wonder if this recent flap is maybe his way of deliberately burning his bridges now that he seems to want to go to Alberta. Personally, for me, he sort of reminds me of the weird uncle everyone has in their family tree, of whom the less said the better.

I recall that. I also got into it will Hashimori not only on that site, but for the brief time he came on to FG, before he was banned from FG. Hashimori was and is a liar, but I will agree with you TC. Debito went out of his way to flame him, but again there was some cause.

I'm positive Deadbeato will be in his Alberta digs absolutely delighted at all this attention he's getting, even that dating back 15 years, ODing on ego boost. So what if it's mostly critical, it's all about him.
I'm not giving him any more attention and will ignore anything and everything to do with him...until I forget (Alc-heimer's)

An insightful and well-written review, especially for someone who isn't a pro reviewer.
The big surprise: the guy who wrote it is an investment banker!

Is that supposed to be rhyming slang?
Reminds me of the Irish calling their pre-euro currency the punt because it rhymed with "bank manager."

No, the guy is actually an investment banker:

Contributor Bio: Scott Urista has a quarter of a century of experience in Japan. He is an executive director for a major Japanese investment bank. He currently lives in London with his wife, two-year old son and Golden Retriever.

I didn't know those guys could write ... or read ... (just kidding, you investment bankers).
