I've never heard that abortion is only legal in Japan due to a loophole in the law. Does anyone know if that's true?

Sort of how like the defacto speed limit is 100 kmh...

A lady friend mentioned emergency contraception, which I wouldn't have thought was already available here, but I had no idea it was only approved a few months ago.

Depending on the city you can get a good portion of it reimbursed.

OTC drugs cost a shitton here and don't work, but you can go to the doctors office and get precsription drugs for minor ailments for about the same cost. Small local drug stores charge out the ass.

They are pricey but it's not like they're so expensive it's a burden to buy them. What I hate is having to waste my time seeing a doctor for something I could buy OTC in 5 minutes in most other countries.

Luckily I work for an employer who lets us make trips to the doctor in the middle of the day as long as we don't take more than a couple of hours without using paid leave. I didn't always and it sucks because taking time off to get something as basic as cold medicine fucking sucks.

While we're on the subject another thing I HATE is having to go to the doctor everytime you need a prescription refilled. Especially as most doctors won't presribe more than a month's worth of meds. Fucking highway robbery (of my time).

I can tell you for a fact that it has been 100,000 yen at most hospitals for quite a few years. Even back when 100g was a lot of money....

Back to the original post, the morning after pill is really an emergency only option - eg broken condom etc. It makes you feel really sick apparantly. I nursed a girlfriend when she took it once and she was really not feeling great.

The low dose pill is in Japan but it is not taken that often as girls are too worried about getting "fat".

Contraception education is pretty woeful actually.

THIS X100000000000

Same excuse about Gaikoku meds being "too strong for Japanese"

Are you serious? Why does the city you live in dictate what your NHI covers and doesn't cover? ?

I think he means the some cities reimburse a large portion of the prenatal care costs, so if you live in one of those municipalities, you can save your receipts and get much of what you paid returned. I think some also cover the cost of delivery. Interestingly, C-sections covered - natural births...not so much.

That was the exact reason my friend told me she isn't on it...

I would agree personally as the pill I take for my sinuses is just an enzyme which I got OTC when last in the US, but have to go to the doctor here once a month as others mentioned to get the prescription. But to play devil's advocate my step-mom (American) is actually a licensed Chinese herbalist (kanpou), etc. with a degree in it. When I described how it was here with all the herbs and other drugs being so heavily regulated she nearly yelled "That's how it should be here! People have no idea what they are taking!" Also it was at least 3x more expensive there than here doctors visit included.

NHI pays up to 400,000 yen for the delivery of the baby after the 4th month. I recall the 4th month being quoted perhaps from NAMBU the Tokyo union's website. Quite the avatar you got. :)

Couldn't agree more! And then there are the times that I can't get paid leave at all...never agree to a fixed hourly salary.
