Though I loathe the idea of defending this bigoted jingoist cunt, he does say "it's about time we..." so it's not like he's forgotten fucking over hanami for people in Tokyo.

I'm sure this anti-austerity move is all part of Japan's government push to "stop rumors" like the cuntry leaking lethal levels of radiation and shite. I'm incredulous that Japanese organizations (public and private) don't seem to realize that in the rest of the world, when you're caught lying it usually means you create sort of a credibility gap. Except for George W. Bush, but he stood for office in a place where Mericans vote.

I think he also has an eye on putting Tokyo forward for the Olympics again and realizes it will be helpful to show Tokyo back to business as usual as soon as possible.

If I have the right numbers, about 1 in 4 eligible Japanese voters went for Ishihara, which is actually quite impressive. He received ~2.5 million votes, from a total voting population of 10 million and a total turnout of around 57 percent. His closest competitor only got around half the number of votes.

Voting (and voters, by extension) just might be the fatal flaw of representative democracies ]http://www.japannewstoday.com/?tag=tokyo-governor-election-results[/url]

Mulboyne, you are spot on! He wants to make another bid for the the Olympics and this is his way to show that Tokyo is an exciting and vibrant city.
How much money has this oligarch wasted trying to get the Olympics in Tokyo, and why is he so hell bent on them. It is his worst nightmare, thousands of foreigners descending on his city!!!

You haven't...it was 1 in 4 eligible Tokyo voters.

Actually, these were interesting figures, but they don't really surprise. Ishihara is idolized by a certain section of the public and lionized by mainstream media and nationalists. He likes creating an image of being an authoritarian strongman, an image that does more than most to arouse the Japanese media and voting public into taking care of their elections.

For Ishihara, the governorship is perfect. Unlike being shunted to the sidelines in national politics -- or perhaps being given such "instrumental" Cabinet posts as Transport Minister -- he can go front and center as leader of the world's biggest city, shoot his mouth off at will and sleep soundly knowing that he has no worthwhile responsibility in terms of the bigger scheme of things and will not be held accountable anyway. And he can maintain the authoratitive voice so adored by the Japanese media and public (look at how potential replacement PMs are lauded and placed on pedestals until they actually gain the office and later suffer when they're revealed to be, shock, horror, real people who make mistakes and can't solve every problem put before them).

Eligible would imply Tokyo, but let's not quibble. Unless, that is to say, you think there are only 10 million *eligible voters* in Japan.

For the record, I think he is an asshole. As for Japanese politics in general, I'm a complete ignoramus. Point and laugh at me, because I have no fucking clue. I have a hard enough time keeping up with American politics, and boy, is that a fucking crazy system right there. I can't stand Obama, and the republicans are so scary I'm tempted to renounce my citizenship. Maybe Iceland is open to a little immigration?

Actually, I don't think there's anywhere on earth where politics functions properly.
Absolute dictatorships, perhaps, but they don't tend to be too much fun unless you're the absolute dictator. And even then I'd imagine you'd spend your nearly every waking moment wondering whose going to stab you in the back and usurp your power.
Just give me a modest beachfront property not prone to natural disasters, year-round warmth, a border collie, decent bird, Net connection and FG and I'd be set for life wherever it was.

Blinky says Tokyo wants to host the Olympics 'AT ANY COST'

Postby Taro Toporific » Wed Jul 06, 2011 9:52 am

[floatl]Image[/floatl]Tokyo to bid for 2020 Olympics: Ishihara
Kyodo, July 06, 2011
Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara said Tuesday that Japan's capital city will bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games to contribute to reconstruction following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Tokyo is ready to host the Olympics "at any cost," Ishihara told a symposium on post-disaster reconstruction work. The statement followed Ishihara's remark in his policy speech at a regular session of the metropolitan assembly in June that Tokyo is prepared to launch another Olympic bid...more...

South Korea was just awarded the 2018 winter games:
http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/43653033/ns/sports-olympic_sports/

I suspect that pretty much torpedos Binky's idea of Tokyo getting 2020. I guess two consecutive games could be so close geographically but it doesn't seem all that likely.

Well, the summer games in 2004 were in Athens and then 2006 winter games were in Turin, Italy.

great, more tax payers' money wasted, and if they get the gig they will end up even more in the red with a bunch of new stadiums they don't need

I hope the games go to South Sudan

I wonder if the pregames ceremonies will go through Korea's lengthy history of inventing everything....and how Korean Xenophobia will be exposed.

With 2012 in London and 2016 in Brazil, it is plausible that 2020 could go to Asia.
