US State Department 2011 Human Trafficking Report

Postby Mulboyne » Tue Jun 28, 2011 8:10 pm

The new report is out. Entry for Japan on page 205. No change in the country's Tier 2 rating.

The entry adds concerns about Japan's trainee system but not enough to warrant being put on the Watch List.

It is always a little galling to me that the US State Department seems to bitch about non compliance of countries such as Canada or members of the EU when bonded labor is still going on in farms all over California and Florida.

Sort of reminds me of an old National Lampoon issue on tourism abroad where they came down against visiting any foreign country on the basis them all being 'international lawbreakers' except the Lampoon article was a parody.

Prosecution
The Japanese government took modest, but overall inadequate, steps to enforce laws against trafficking during the reporting period; while the government reportedly increased its law enforcement efforts against forced
prostitution, it did not report any efforts to address forced labor.

sounds like a general statement on Japan alone...
